What most people do (that is, my brother does it!) is Remote Control of the computer.
VNC and its variants can get you started, although there are many other tools. I will let you decide which is the best for you, but I do remember one that used GPG keys or similar strong security algorithms.
At the end, it is not
VPN, because you are not making a virtual network. Correct me if I am wrong, but routers and other network devices need to support VPN. I do not think many home routers allow that.
