You are saying that only WMA's fail to update no? In that case as they come from WMP I wonder if DRM has something to do with it. I don't know if MediaMonkey is able to update WMA files with DRM, maybe someone else knows.

For those files that don't get their tags updated it's no surprise that the date modified also doesn't update
Yes, but I have tried forcing it by, for example adding a composer, then removing it again.
Also make sure the option Modify timestamp when updating tags is enabled under Tools > Options > Tags & Playlists.
Obviously.

I will look into the link you posted but it is quite old and my system is fully up to date with WMP11.

For those files that don't get their tags updated it's no surprise that the date modified also doesn't update as no update is being made to the file. If just WMA's are the issue, make sure they're not read-only and that you do have permissions to modify them.

Also see:

Also make sure the option Modify timestamp when updating tags is enabled under Tools > Options > Tags & Playlists.

Thanks Lowlander. The Update tags box is ticked on my system and it seems to work for MP3 files. But not for WMA files that were originally ripped by Windows Media Player.

The second suggestion show all tags synchronised. The problem is not that the tags are wrong but the last modified date on the file is not updated so nothing else knows it has changed - e.g. backup software. I have written software that does this for special reasons but I don't think it is appropriate here and was hoping to be able to turn it off.

Make sure you have permission to modify the files and have Update tags when editing properties enabled under Tools > Options > Tags & Playlists.

To try to fix your existing tracks go to Library > Files to Edit > Unsynchronized Tags, select all tracks and use Tools > Advanced Tag Management > Synchronize Tags.

I don't know about all the stuff about original dates but I have the same problem with stuff that was originally ripped in WMP. I have about 5,000 of these and now I am trying to slightly change the way I tag them in MM (Classical tracks mostly so they index better) but I can't get the tags to stick at all. The MM index looks fine but the files themselves are not updating. It looks like it is doing it as the blue line shows track after track being modified but the last modified date on the file doesn't change. Unless the last modified date changes (on my NAS) then the files do not get backed up.

I don't get it - first you asked about an Original Date node, but now you're off on something about searching. The search box is totally unrelated to what node you have open in the MM library, since you can search the whole library no matter what view is open in MM. Just type the year in the search box and it will search the original year as long as you have configured search to do so in the options (Tools > Options > Search).

And no, there is no "Original date" node available. However, you can just modify the "Year" node to suit your needs, just enable the "Original date" column with the Year node opened and sort by original date instead of year.
Sorry if I am sounding "thick" but how do I do that?

And if I do search, using that method, will it allow me to find all tracks, originally, issued in (for example) 1974?

I do NOT wish to lose the ability to search by "Year" in the future, so do not wish to do anything that would make a permanent change.

Maybe, "Original Date" could be incorporated as a ""Node" in future releases?

Certainly, I would find it very helpful to be able to search (for example) for all R&B recordings originally issued in any given year (I use multiple genres, in addition to the "Year" and "Original date" options - So, for example, a track could be listed as "Year" 1990, "Original date" 1973, genre 70's;70's R&B;70's Soul;70's Funk;R&B;Soul;Funk.

What I would hope to have is the ability to, not only, search by decade (e.g. 70's), by genre but also by specific original date (again by genre, or not).

Two examples.

1) 73 (original date) - ALL music.

2) 73 (original date) - Soul.

I can, already, search in a similar vein on "Year" - Why not on "Original date" and if I cannot why am I filling in the box?

Make sure that WMP does save the tags to the files and modifies the Time Stamp. If the latter isn't the case go to Tools > Options > Library and deselect "Only for files with changed timestamp or size".
I'm not quite sure what you are suggesting here.

When I first started using MM I transferred my entire library from WMP (Not large but around 4,000 tracks).

Any tracks/albums that I have since modified in MM appear unchanged in my music folder but any tracks/albums I first edit in WMP THEN add to my music folder accept the changed tag information I then make in MM.

I only found out yesterday that if I copy the tracks from my music folder (that will NOT accept updating in MM) BACK onto my C drive, then edit in WMP and then re-add again to my music folder, then rescan to MM that any changes I then make in MM are saved to my music folder.

Sorry if that sounds convoluted and long winded but I could not think of any other way to describe my problem.

I only chanced upon this method when I found that downloads, which I normally, edit in WMP (because of the album info' facility) [composers] are then updated once I tag them in MM with additional information (genre etc.) but those THAT ORIGINATED in WMP do not accept changes!

I know that I have the problem (I have around 4,000 tracks that were originally in WMP) what I am hoping is that someone can give me a faster method of "getting round it" than I have found.

p.s. Sorry if someone found the image I posted offensive.

It was not rude and only was intended as a bit of fun!

When you update tags in another application like WMP you will need to use File > Add/Rescan Tracks. This will update the MediaMonkey database with the new values in the files.

Make sure that WMP does save the tags to the files and modifies the Time Stamp. If the latter isn't the case go to Tools > Options > Library and deselect "Only for files with changed timestamp or size".

What type of files are they?

And no, there is no "Original date" node available. However, you can just modify the "Year" node to suit your needs, just enable the "Original date" column with the Year node opened and sort by original date instead of year.

This is an, unashamed, "bump" to my earlier post.

Normally, the mods/management are great at answering basic questions very quickly, but (it would seem) not tonight!

So guys/guyesses here is a little something (consider it a bribe)!

And NO, before you ask, it's not me!

"Synching Tracks/Albums (Whatever) + Another Question!

by Laeotaekhun » Thu Nov 26, 2009 7:32 am

Starting at the beginning - I think is the best way (may take more words but will, probably, explain my problem better).

Firstly.

I used to use WMP as my media player.

However, any tracks that were. initially, stored on WMP seem to refuse to update tags in/on MM (using "synchronise tags").

So, the only way I have found of doing this is to copy tracks/albums from "mymusic" (stored on an external drive) to "music" on my internal C drive, re-scan to WMP, edit and then (after deleting) the same tracks in "mymusic" re-scaning them to MM.

Is there a quicker way?

There has to be!

Secondly.

Is there any way of "importing"/including the "Original date" in "My Library" (The column that includes Location, Title, Artist & Album Artist etc.)?

All help will be much appreciated.
