No, because in Win 7/Vista the OS has it's own volume mixer that can control the volume of multiple sound devices at the same time.

Volume control work as it is Internal Volume control of Application that locked Sound Device in WASAPI Exclusive mode.

It's my understanding that the volume controls still work in MM, and the sound is pushed directly to the sound driver/device. Sound from other applications is blocked.

Surely someone is able to give some explanation on here as to whether MM is giving a true bitperfect output using wasapi, and if so why it is that the volume control on MM, as well as the windows volume control itself still works? Surely this means that some software is coming between the signal and the output? If not could someone explain please? I like media monkey.

Yes, unfortunately it does looks like I am right and nobody knows for sure what is going on with wasapi and mm4. Not good. I don't think it's giving bitperfect output. If it is why does the volume control work on both windows and mm??? Therefore, unless you are running a soundcard that has it's own asio drivers, you are condemned to having the dreaded asio4all drivers installed and randomly freezing mm when playing random files. I think I'll have to spend a bit more time sorting out the interface for foobar so its 'browse file tree' function works as well as MM, then I can swap.

Looks like you're right Paul.

Update. Well, kernel streaming isn't working for me. There isn't an option to select a device when I try to configure it and selecting the blank bar doesn't help. MM skips through all the tracks and no sound is heard. I'm finally considering moving over to foobar :-(

It's not looking good is it? Maybe no one knows! I was using ASIO with a creative soundcard set to pass through on my old laptop, but the new one won't accept the pmcia card so I'm using a usb to spdif/optical converter which means that I've not got any soundcard drivers that will accept ASIO. This in turn meant I had to install ASIO for all which works OK, but then seems to have issues with some files which causes MM to freeze. So I decided to give wasapi a go, but I'm not convinced that it's giving me bitperfect out. I might give kernel streaming a go, but that Steve Monks page seems to be down now.

But I'd still like to know how come both the windows and MM volume controls still work? I thought a bitperfect output bypassed all system processes? And yes, I also want to make the most of my 24/96 files ...

I too am concerned that MM4 is not behaving well with bit perfect or HiRes files.
I need to understand more about what MM4 is doing when playing tracks that are Bitrate 24 Sample rate 96kHz.
I too am running Win 7 x64 using WASAPI and considering buying a V-DAC.

Quick question about wasapi and bit perfect playback: I'm running MM using the wasapi output plugin, I've followed all the procedures offered by nohitter151 elsewhere, but I'm still not sure I'm getting bitperfect output. I was using asio, but that's been causing issues. I'm mainly unsure about the bitperfect playback because all the volume controls work - on both MM and Windows. When I had bitperfect before on XP these controls didn't work so I was sure I was bypassing all the processing from the OS. I've got MM4 and am running it on windows 7 64bit. Maybe this is normal in windows 7? I want to use the DAC on my amp because I'm sure it's better than anything this laptop can offer!!!

I'm still a big fan of MM.
