Check the Properties of the shortcut, they may point to different MediaMonkey's.

I have new information. The loss of playlists seems to happen depending on whether I click on the Shortcut (Windows) in \multimedia\media monkey\ in my start menu or on the Shortcut (Windows) on the Start button (the most recently used list of applications.)

Depending on which I execute I get a different mix of new and old playlists. The one on my start menu is the correct one.

I manage huge enterprise databases for a living and I manage to not lose data ever ... ok just once but we don't need to talk about that right now.

I have verified there is only on MM.DB on my machine and it was not cleared accidentally or otherwise.

So I will just mark this as: "Gremlins"

Playlists are saved in the database (MM.DB). If they're missing they were either deleted by the user, removed when the database was cleared or a new/wrong database is being used). You can export Playlists (AutoPlaylists will be exported as static Playlists) with Tools > Scripts > Export All Playlists.

This is the third time I have logged into my MM over the past three months and found missing playlists. It is a little annoying.

First I am a very experienced PC user (I am a programmer and a database professional) so I don't think I am "doing something" to it.

I have located the MM.DB now and made a backup copy. What I want to know is, where do the missing playlists go? and is there any way I can export a playlist to back it up in case it gets "lost" again?

Not sure i understand your meaning:

I should select each .db (one by one) into media monkey, the export to a new playlist, using export to playlist feature.
after doing all 6, select the .db i actually want to use & scan this new playlist into mm

No, you can't scan in the databases. You could only tell MediaMonkey to use each one of those databases, then in MediaMonkey export all the Playlists stored in the database. Then use the database you want to keep and scan in the exported Playlists.

Let me recap just in case I'm missing something very obvious.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\MediaMonkey. - here i have 6 different db files all with different names, all listed as data base files & all with a value under size column. one is named MM which i assume is the one being used by media monkey.
in the folder there are also two configuration settings files, media monkey & extensions.

From media monkey i run Add/Rescan files..... enabled are all file types. for the scan i deselect all folders except the above path.

mm appears to do a very quick scan. checking under imported playlists i find nothing listed.

Filename doesn't matter. Just make sure the M3U file type is enabled in the Add/Rescan Files File Type dialog and then check for them under the Imported Playlists node.

ooops! you are quite correct. i was looking at the MM folder - C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\MediaMonkey.
fixed it! I was able to navigate to the folder using MM now. selected down to MM folder & ran scan (file types all - hide unselected items). hi ok. nothing.
deselected this folder & selected my library folder & ran scan to check if working. works ok. added a few new tracks downloaded yesterday. & can see scan details at screen bottom.

just a thought - this folder contains several playlists now but only one is named MM (the current one). the others i had to rename for example mm 1 nirv
will the scan be able to pick up this (& the other old playlists) is a playlist i wish to scan into my MM?

any help appreciated.

Are you sure? Application Data is a hidden folder by default as it is not meant to store user files (like music).
