Try updating, you are using an older version that could possibly contain a bug.

Also, it's good to do regular "unsync'd" checks just to make sure there isn't anything slipping through the cracks.
I try to do it, at least, once a month.
I'll do thisfrom now on,
but i still can't understand the process, i made this 'Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ' artist name change in MM, it was clearly written into the tracks.
Then, after noticing my mistake, again in MM, i did a 'Auto tag from filename" on the affected files,
this action changed the Arthur Conan Doyle name back into the proper artist names.
As it turned out , this action was not synched.
What am i missing here?

Great to here everything worked out for you! :) Also, it's good to do regular "unsync'd" checks just to make sure there isn't anything slipping through the cracks.

here is how it went:
I selected about 5000 files at a time, there was no problem at all.
Before I did this I checked my backups ( several off-line hard disks) , it turned out the latest backup dated 10 days ago was also affected.
An older backup, about one month, was clean.
So the lesson learned is always make sure to have archived backups; in this case I didn't have to revert to a backup, thanks to your advice the problem is solved now.
thank you for helping out.

Personally, I don't like doing "massive" changes all at once because of how it affects the backup process (media files).
I like to make changes in mini sessions or separate them out by either sending them to a playlist or identifying them in some field and collection them out to work on/leave them when want (which you can't do from the "unsync" view).

But in this case, since you are just retagging instead of something like re-encoding, You'll have to do them all at once or expect to have to keep redoing the unsynch process to do each next few that you do. Unless you want to do a few at a time all in the same session of work and not leave the unsync view.

Doing them all at once causes "long" single backup process the next time you do a backup of your files.
Some people say, "yeah just do it over over night" and by morning it's done! That's great and all, especially with a smaller collection, but
I don't like "long" backups 'cause I'm always afraid something might happen in the middle of the process. I just like to make a few changes here and there and
then backup right after each mini session. Maybe, no bigger than around 1000 - 2000 files at a time.

I just now did try it out with one book.
As you predicted the import to the player is ok now ,no more Arthur Conan Doyle!

What do you think about these 40.000 tracks? should i divide them manually by selecting a number of tracks or could i just do them all?

Ok, but did you try what I mentioned above?

I'm not sure if I understand,if i , for example, alter the genre of a number of tracks, this is then written into the tracks.
Why would I need to synchronise these tracks?
or is a properties change something special, which I need to synchronise?
If changes to the tags are made outside of MM, you may need to do an "unsync" check.
the name change was made within MM
try:
Go to Entire Library > Files to Edit > unsynchronized tags > wait until process is over > If any tracks show up, see if they are the ones you are
having issues with > synch tags > move some to device > then back again > see if consistent
I did as you suggested, unsynchronised tags found 40.000 tracks with the artist and album artist field unsynchronised.
I'm not sure these are all the affected tracks, I tried some and they are indeed wrongly named.
Could MM handle 40.000 tracks? my hardware is capable.
What version are you using?
4.1.10.778

track properties different outside MM

A few weeks ago I attempted to alter artist names on a bunch of books.
I had a number of Sherlock Holmes books, the artist was either Sir Arthur Conan Doyle or Arthur Conan Doyle.
so I did a ctrl a ctrl c on all these books ( I thought).
Then I changed in properties the artist field into' Arthur Conan Doyle' .
after pressing the okay button I discovered I had actually selected hundreds of books.
MM was unresponsive so I had to let it finish.

I removed the Arthur Conan Doyle books from the list, picked 'Auto tag from filename" and when I came back all the books had their original artist names again.
( all foldernames are : \Artist\Album , so this mask ' <Skip><Album Artist>-<Album>\ ' gets me the correct book/ author)
Pffff problem solved!

Then I synced some books to my MP3 player and, low and behold, all albums/books where from Arthur Conan Doyle.
in Explorer and in Mp3bookhelper the artist on all the tracks where indeed Arthur Conan Doyle.

1. how can it be that when I a view track properties in MM I see a different artist compared to outside MM?
2. I'd like to know if there is a reasonably simple way to get the actual names in order again?
re-scanning these books is no option, too many books I did work on after importing, serialising, covers, book reviews in comments etc.
TIA
