you can use this programm if you want to avoid iTunes:
http://download.cnet.com/CopyTrans-Driv ... ?tag=mncol

it will install all the components of iTunes MM will need to "see" the iPod/iPhone but not the entire programm.

An other solution would be:
1. Download the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe is you're using 64-bit) file
2. Rename the .exe to .msi
3. Get 7-Zip to extract only what you need from the iTunes installer archive.
4. Open up the zipped file (right click 7-zip -> Open Archive, open .rsrc directory) and extract AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi for 64-bit), and QuickTime.msi (Quicktime lite recommended instead)
4.1 iTunes v9.1 - In the .rsrc directory, opend the RCDATA directory and extract the CABINET file. Rename it to amds.cab, open that file again with 7Zip, and then extract the .msi files as above.
5. Install these files

Just because iTunes is installed on the PC, does not mean you have to use it. Regardless, if you expect to be able to upgrade the firmware, you're going to need iTunes anyway.

Did anyone else install MM because they were told you could sync with an iPod without iTunes and are now feverishly disappointed to have it pointed out that one needs iTunes to sync with MM? Can anyone explain to me why ANYONE would download MM or anything else if you are still requiring the ball-and-chain iTunes installed on your computer?

You need to have iTunes and Quicktime installed for the iPhone/Touch support drivers.

Is the Quicktime the thing? I'm experiencing this same problem. Win7 sees iPod Touch as a camera; MM says I have no devices connected.

I had this issue when I'd installed Quicktime alternative instead of the normal Quicktime, maybe that is the case for you?

You'll need to ensure that iTunes is installed and upgrade to the latest MM.
