Since my original post I have changed a few things and now seem to be getting along fine. I use an auto-playlist to go into my library and create a library for my iPhone. I then copy the contents of these auto-playlists into corresponding static playlists. Using these static playlists as sources for all the sub-playlists on my iPhone seems to alleviate all my problems.

I have a 16g iPhone and a 32g Zen and I have zero problems auto-synching it with MM.

My last iPhone sync included 13 playlists and the Zen included 17, eight of which included many of the same songs. I, too, was confused about the number of songs and size of the sync. I believe MM adds the total of the playlists since it has no way in the configure screen to know what songs are in each playlist. Therefore, it will seem as though more songs are being synced than actually are.

My suggestion would be to configure the iPhone, select the playlists you want to sync, and AutoSync. This will place all the songs (without duplicates) and playlists on the iPhone and you should be good to go.

Could you summarize the problem into a few sentences. I'm not up for reading that wall o' text

iPhone Syncing and MediaMonkey Playlists

I know there are other posts on this but none seem to be able to explain the problem. But here's where I am:

First, I have an 8gb iPhone 3g on which I would like to sync my music via MediaMonkey. I have 58gb of music in my library in like 13 genres, all rated between 1 and 5 stars. I do not want to completely fill up the phone's storage. I need to leave some free space for various apps.

I then create an auto-playlist filtered by status as music, genres A, B, C, D, G, I, and J; rated at least three stars, and between 60 and 600 seconds long; with a total size not to exceed 6000mb. It is then sorted by rating first, from five stars down to one; and then randomly by name, thus ensuring that all my four and five star rated tracks are always in the playlist and the remaining space is filled randomly with tracks rated three stars. This playlist serves as the "library" for my iPhone. As it sits now, it stands at 898 files @ 5.9gb.

Next I create several more auto-playlists using this "library" playlist as a source; e.g. one playlist that includes genres A, B, and C, and rated either four or five stars; another the exact same only including tracks rated either THREE, four, or five stars; another that includes four or five star tracks across all genres; and on and on... I currently have four playlists pulling from the "library" playlist. Since these playlists all get their tracks from the "library" playlist you will have many of the same tracks across the playlists. As it stands, when I go to the Auto-Sync list in the Configure Device options and select the five playlists I have it shows a total of 1564 files @ 10.2gb, even though all these playlists get their tracks from the same 898 files in the "library" playlist.

At this point it doesn't matter if I select the Sync Random Subset... option or not, the sync is incomplete. The status bar indicates it's copying ?? of ???? tracks, where it's usually trying to copy 1000-1200 tracks which is 100-300 more tracks than there is total tracks in the source playlist. I had theorized that if I selected the Sync Random Subset... option that as it tried to copy a file for a second or third time it would either see the existing file and skip it or just copy over it since it should be copied as the same file name. Though there is that feature in Windows that just appends the file name with (2) if you copy in an identical file, so I wondered if that might be going on here. Though that doesn't explain why MediaMonkey is, as I write this, trying to trying to sync ??? of 1109 files even though there are the 898 files from the source and 1564 files in the Configure Device options. How did it come up with 1109? I would think that MediaMonkey would analyze the files scheduled to be copied and omit duplicate names from the list thereby arriving back at the 898 files in my "library" playlist which were intended to be copied. On the above mentioned sync, the iPhone was full after 971 of the 1109 files were copied. Do I have all of my 898 files with 73 tracks having duplicates? And now my phone's storage is completely full leaving no working room for anything.

So the question remains, how do I get MediaMonkey to copy the files and the playlists to my iPhone without trying to copy duplicate items and running out of room? It seems MediaMonkey is copying each playlist individually and autonomously, without consideration for the end result. I love the software, and would like nothing more than to find a way over this hump and any help from anywhere would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
