I already have the iphone explorer you recommended.

Thanks in advance.
The device options under "Auto sync options" tab.

If it gets delete by MM you might want to add "*.m4r" into the exclude folders part of the iPod device config options.

After one day of using the technique of dragging ringtones to my iPhone icon,
I have discovered that this does not work since the ringtones get deleted after a few syncs from MM.

I am now trying another suggestion from that forum.

2nd suggestion:
1) Make sure there is no excess information in the ringtone, just the name of the ringtone.
2) Drag the ringtone from the iTunes ringtone folder to the iPhone icon.

I found the solution on the following website and it worked for me.
I was also able to copy ringtones as long as 38 seconds.

Here is the link and the solution below:
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=417845

1) Import/Add your m4r files to the iTunes Library.
2) Drag to iPhone ICON not to the Ringtone folder"

Nevertheless, yours seem to be more versatile and after a few twinkering I am up to speed with it. (Thanks very much)
However I do have a few issues.

1) My existing ringtones on the PC has to be in MP3 format in order to upload. (No big deal)
2) I can't just upload the existing MP3 ringtones, I have to use the ringtone editor feature.
3) When using this ringtone editor feature I have to convert the files one at a time.
4) Once I get the files onto the device it works fine and the ringtones co exist with my music on the iPhone
However once I sync in iTunes, the ringtones are gone again.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
Sorry, I don't use it.

Yeh I tried that and it works for everything but ringtones. I see folders for Downloads, Photos, Podcasts, Purchases, Recordings and Safari.... but none for ringtones.
So I don't think it would be a solution for ringtone transfer.

Update: Today I downloaded iTunes 9.1 and now iPhone Explorer does not work. I get the following message:
"iPhone Explorer could not load the needed iPhone device files. Please make sure that iTunes 8.0 or later is installed on the computer."

I am currently testing the ringtone sync in iTunes and I would post an update shortly.

How to get ringtones onto iPhone without syncing iTunes

by triniallan » Thu Apr 01, 2010 1:06 am

Does anyone know how to get ringtones onto the iPhone without using iTunes?
I want to know because everytime I enable ringtone syncing in iTunes, all my music content gets deleted from the iPhone.

Everything was working fine. I had ringtones on the iPhone and I had the ringtone sync disabled in iTunes.
This problem started when I enabled ringtone sync in iTunes in order to add more ringtones to the phone.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
