The file mask suggested here does not on its own fix the problem. It seems the issue is by overlong path names. After lengthy experimentation I eventually found some suggestions here which appear to have solved the problem:

No I didn't, I hadn't spotted that option until you mentioned it. Thanks. I've now done that, and a resync is underway which may take some time. I'll post my findings here when it completes.

Did you enable the option to enforce the sync mask for files already on the device (if available), otherwise files on the device will remain as they are.

I just updated the configuration of the File Locations of the Fiio X1 in MM so that the file names for both Music and Classical employ the mask you suggested, saved the Config, then I resynced the Fiio. The sync happened very quickly, it was as if nothing had changed, and the problem still exists.

Check your Device Profile. It determines how files are stored on the device. You likely have <Title> for filename, thus the filename on your PC has no effect on the filename on the device.

The question is where the truncation happens. It could be the device. Furthermore the question would be if the issue is the length of the filename or the length of the full Path on device.

You could use $Left(<Title>,40) as the Mask for Filename and see if this fixes the problem. It would automatically truncate the filename on the device to a max of 40 characters.

I just shortened the file name in MM to "Concerto In B Flat For Strings Op 10 Andante.mp3" and resynced. This seems to have no effect on the device. So the device is either not displaying the file name as such, or updating the file name in MM has not caused any changes in the device after the sync.

I just checked a piece which is displaying the issue I described.

It's file name on the laptop was (without the quotes) "02 Claudio Scimone- I S - Albinoni- Concerto In B Flat For Strings, Op. 10-1 - 1. Andante.mp3". There are no foreign characters as such. I then removed the first full stop and the comma in case they were causing problems, resynced, but the problem still exists.

In the playlist on the device, the file name appears to have been truncated to (again without quotes) "02 Claudio Scimone- I S - Albinoni- Concerto I", whereas when I access the music file through the Artist directory structure on the device, the whole file name is displayed.

So it seems to me this file name truncation in the playlist on the device is causing the problem.

I'm wondering whether there is a simple way in MM of identifying file names which may be subject to this truncation on the device's playlists, so I can shorten them and (hopefully) remove this issue.

This may have been discussed before.

It may have to do with foreign characters in the filenames. Check if that's the case.

The Fiio X1 is a dedicated digital music player, so as far as I know I am using the device's own player. I certainly have not had to install a player on it.

What Player are you using on the device?

Some tracks in some playlists on my device are not found

by Marbrien » Mon Dec 11, 2017 6:56 am

Some tracks in some playlists on my device are reported by the device as not found, even though those music files are present on the device.

I’m using Media Monkey for Windows 4.1.19.1859, on a laptop running Windows 10 Home version 1709 64 bit. My music player device is a Fiio X1 with a 64 GB memory card. My issue is as follows.

1. Some tracks on some playlists on my device do not play, instead I get the message “Playback failed. File not found”. The issue seems to be present on those playlists which contain classical music, although I have not tested every track on every playlist so cannot be sure.

2. On the device, the music files which get the ‘File not found’ error in a playlist all appear to be present on the device, and will play normally on the device if accessed via Artist or Album rather than via the playlist.

3. Other tracks on the same playlist will play back normally on the device.

4. The same tracks on the same playlists on the laptop all playback normally.

5. My device syncs to MM normally, and neither the device nor MM reports any errors.

6. I have set my device sync options to, among other things, force relative paths, and use the M3U playlist format.

Thanks in advance for any help.
