you can left click (or ctrl click for mac) on the ipod in itunes and create a new playlist. Then you add the songs from your iPod's music library...not your itunes library. This will prevent duplicates on your ipod.

If you select to remove tracks not on the play list then won't it delete every song that is not on the playlist, causing you to lose any iFill songs that haven't been saved to the PC?

There has to be a better way to check the device as you synch a playlist to it so that if the song exists, it doesn't copy it to the device. (By has to be, I mean I surely wish there is.)

I run into the same issue with my 80g video... takes a long time to swap in and out music while ensuring no duplicates.

I don't have this problem, autoplaylists are generated on my iPod mini (2nd gen) quite nicely on a sync.
G5 ipod, the issue is the doubles the songs on the playlist. it doen't do it right. it should use the songs aleady in the sync, not send a second copy of the same song for the playlist. waste of space.

Try the setting to remove (or not) songs not on current playlists.
Methinks you have it set wrong.

Well, I figured out the perfect solution, and believe me I have been trying for a long time to come up with one.
The perfect solution is: Use Winamp!
I went to Winamp, located my Ipod, and was able to create playlists right on my Ipod. I didn't have to create them in the Library at all. I could also change the names of my on the go playlists on my Ipod, which is another thing I couldn't do with MM.
I will probably continue to use MM for most of my music management, but for playlists, Winamp is the way to go! And, its free!

Playlists on Ipod - Duplicate songs - Am I just dumb?

It seems simple enough. All I want to do is create a playlist, give it a name and put it on my Ipod.
The problem is that I get duplicate songs on the Ipod.
My Ipod, and computer library databases are identical.
First I rebuild my Ipod database to be sure it matches my library, so there won't be any confusion in recognizing a song as a duplicate.
Then, I make the playlist, transfer it to Ipod, and the songs on the Ipod are duplicated.
WHY????
