Moving From iTunes to MM The First Steps: why no ratings?

Postby richiefinger on Tue Nov 03, 2009 7:07 am

I'm making the first tentative steps of moving to MM from iTunes, I've been using iTunes since the first ipod came out and have about 30,000 tracks and I'm finding things a bit daunting.
At the moment I have not upgraded to Gold as I'm seeing if MM is fit for purpose. I have just spent some time rating a lot of tracks in iTunes. I closed iTunes down (library saved) Then opened MM, I rescanned my itunes folder. When I looked at the tracks i had just been rating only 2 had stars next to them. It's things like this that worry me. Can Somebody suggest a reason. Many Thanks

Not sure, maybe something is wrong with your iTunes library. Anyway you could just use this method:

1. In your current music manager, select all of the tracks in a given category
(e.g. all tracks that have a rating of '2') and make them into a playlist.

2. In your current music manager, export the playlist (e.g. rat2.m3u)

3. With MediaMonkey, scan the directory containing the new playlist.

4. In MediaMonkey select all the tracks from the new playlist (e.g. in
Playlists > Imported .m3u Playlists > rating2) and right-click and
select 'Properties'.

5. Edit the property that you wish to change (e.g. in this case, change
Rating to '2 stars') and click 'Ok' to update all the tracks at once.

Ummm. Whilst thats a solution and I thank you for it
the stock answer of 'something wrong with your whatever (itunes library)' seems to be a bit of a theme on these boards and why i'm not paying any money at the moment.
if it was a 3rd party script fair enough but its built into the program.
Oh well, i'll see what else happens before coming to a conclusion on MM.

Well, I said "maybe". How am I supposed to know why it doesn't work?

did you try the setting to import itunes ratings?

from what i can gather, itunes has crappy tags, and also does not embed ratings into the tags. so any ratings that are tagged either came with the file, or are from you using a diff program.

try to import the itunes ratings and see if that helps. although i think it would have given you the option to do that after import....

I did use the 'import itunes information' on my original import. MM doesnt seem to give you that option when you 'RE-scan'
Oh well. It hasn't taken long for me to realise that MM is what i need. When it shows the Publisher field i might start paying for it.
No View for Publisher/Record Labels? I thought this product was aimed at collectors and serious Music enthusiasts, yes I know I can copy it to a custom field by why should I.

You are pretty demanding... Maybe there is a version issue. itunes changed their database structure maybe you have the old database maybe you have the new database. I tunes is only one app. Are you suggesting that a free app is required to import all versions of all audio software ever made flawlessly? The reason I know about this is I frequent an Apple board and itunes has problems with the new database structure if you down grade. When someone upgraded itunes on both the computer and the ipod the ipod did not work in his car stereo so he down graded. The end result is he lost everything because the downgrade process was not correct. Your music will be MUCH safer with MM.

Now how do I import the year of a track to an mp3 tag from a spreadsheet!!! an album at a time?????
