Any way to prevent MM from stealing focus on start up?

Postby AnthonyM1229 » Sat Jun 23, 2012 12:49 pm

I'm using the current 4.0.5 version on Windows 7 x64 (but have experienced this issue for as long as I've been using MM...just haven't felt bothered enough until now to report it, though.)

I have a huge music library of over 80k tracks, and so, MM takes at least 10 seconds to load. I am fine with this, as I'm sure it takes time to load such a big library. However, I am not fine with MM stealing focus away from another app when it's finally done loading. In 10-15 seconds, I could go through a couple e-mails in Mozilla Thunderbird, for example, but then MM would bring itself to the front of my screen, instead of just flashing in my taskbar, as most programs requesting attention, do. Is there any way to fix this behavior? I've already tried searching for any Windows registry tweaks, but have so far, found no definitive ones that apply to Windows 7.

Strange, I can't reproduce it. When I click MM to load, the splash screen comes to the front. Then, I can click on any other app to bring it to the front (splash screen still shows). Once the splash screen disappears, MM opens in the background, and does not steal focus.

Running 1498 in portable on vista 32, I just tested this and it does steal focus back on mine.
I thought it was to do so when it starts scanning one of media folders on startup -however I disabled startup scan and left scan continuous on
and it still grabs focus. :-?

Not that its a big deal - just another extra click :)

Edit: I suppose it could be an add-on causing the problem - perhaps the OP and me need to compare what add-ons are installed.

I am running a portable install of 1496, if that makes a difference. I also have the splash screen disabled via the mediamonkey.ini file. As a quick test, I tried re-enabling the splash screen. Doing so, MM still forces its way to the front of my screen instead of staying in the background.

As for folder scans, I only have 2 set to scan continuously--nothing to scan on start up. Now, as for add-ons/extensions, I have the following installed:

  • Advanced Report 6.0 - Script
  • Album Art Tagger 4.9 - Script
  • CleanMM 1.0.1 - Skin (Currently Using)
  • CleanScriptsIni 0.81 - Script
  • DiscographyReport 2.1 - Script
  • Export M3Us/Create Playlists for Child Nodes 3.6 - Script
  • Export To Last.fm Syntax 1.1 - Script
  • Last.fm Scrobbler 1.0.2.29 - Script
  • MegaDJ 2.56 - Script
  • NowPlayingFTP 1.8 - Script
  • PlayHistory & Stats 4.0.1 - Script
  • Regexp Find And Replace 4.3 - Script
  • Restore Playhistory/Playlists/Metadata 2.1.1 - Script
  • RightClickForScripts 1.6 - Script
  • SQLViewer 2.4 - Script

Perhaps it is an addon...? I didn't suspect that. This could be a good opportunity for me to prune my addons, anyway, since I know I'm not actively using all of them. I'll update if I figure out something causing the focus-stealing.

Ok the only common scripts/add-ons we have are :
  • Album Art Tagger 4.9 - Script
  • Export M3Us/Create Playlists for Child Nodes 3.6 - Script
  • Regexp Find And Replace 4.3 - Script

I was going to type advanced report but that somehow got missed on the last clean install :D

So, I've removed unnecessary addons, including two of the ones I had in common. No difference in the focus stealing. Then, just to be thorough, I disabled the third addon (by renaming the script file's extension), and still no difference. MM still forces its way to the front of my screen.

So the common thing is that we all have portable installs :-?

Mine is not portable, and I can't reproduce.

I fired up my XP Mode virtual machine, and installed MM (non-portable), and it's still a focus stealer on there...I could chalk that up to some differences between XP and Windows 7, however... (and I'm not really inclined to try the same test on my native 7).
