Are there any plans to implement this feature?

For those of us who do not use iTunes, or who have never used iTunes, what is the "new folder option"?

If I got correctly try this:
1. Right Click -> New Playlist
2. D&D some playlist from Tree onto newly created Playlist

Repeat steps as long as you need.

I don't use itunes either but I found this:

For what I read, these folder-structure can be synced to the ipods, although I haven't tried it. It's not possible with MM.

Holy smokes! This is definitely NOT intuitive, but it is EXACTLY what bassdude was looking for and exactly what I was looking for. I have been seeking a replacement for rotten iTunes and believe that MM is just what I needed. But with a collection of about 150,000 tracks, I have a very extensive collection of playlists and nested playlists is a must! I see from the mediamonkeywiki wish list that this was supposed to be handled (at least partially) in MM2. But there is nothing in the Help and nothing in the FAQ.

What I find to be unintuitive about this method, as simple as it may be, is that you drop one playlist onto another. At least to me, it would seem that you would be able to add a "folder" (yes, it is what iTunes uses, but that doesn't automatically make the idea invalid or unworthy) and D&D (drag and drop) the playlists into the folder. After all, a folder is something that contains files. You don't drop files into files, and it is awkward thinking to drop playlists onto playlists instead of a container like a folder.

For the development team, I'd suggest that this process be listed in the FAQ and Help sections as soon as practical. I would also suggest that the process be revisited to reconsider using a folder or some other container instead of using a playlist to contain playlists. Frankly, I'm just glad that there is a way to nest the playlists some way, some how. It would just be nice (and more intuitive) to use containers like folders.

I'm looking forward to growing into the app.

Cheers.

Nested Playlists

Post by BrickTop » Wed Jul 16, 2008 12:47 am

Thanks again, Peke, for posting the solution to Nested Playlists.

I just tried something else and it worked as well. I created a new playlist and called it "Acoustic & Singer Songwriters." I then right-clicked on the new "playlist" and selected "New Playlist" from the pop-up context menu. A new playlist appeared nested below "Acoustic & Singer Songwriters." So you don't need to just drag and drop an existing playlist on to the container-playlist, you can create a new playlist from scratch under the container-playlist by right clicking on it and selecting "New Playlist."

Awesome. Now I need to go see if it will behave proplerly on my iPod Classic 160.

Cheers.

MM does NOT Nest Playlists ON iPods

Post by BrickTop » Sat Aug 02, 2008 4:44 pm

Well, unfortunately, while the trick above (dropping playlists onto other playlists) does nest the playlists in the Media Monkey app, it does NOT nest them when synch'd to an iPod. (Note: Only the newer iPods out in the last year have the capability to nest playlists.) This is a serious drawback that has me wrestling with how to manage my iPod. Do I manage my music in MM which has infinitely far superior database management capability and then build and manage playlists in iTunes? Or do I forego that rotten program but lose the capability to nest my playlists?

A 160 GB device can hold a LOT of songs, and that adds up to many, many playlists. Even sluggish Apple recognized the problem with having 100+ playists in one long string, so they eventually got around to allowing the newer iPods to nest them. I was even frustrated with the number of playlists I had to scroll through on my 80 GB, but now that I have my 160 GB, the nesting is a necessity.

Clearly, this is a good suggestion for the Wish List.

Just wanted to add that I would like to have this function too.

In iTunes the behavior of playlist folders is that they are syncable playlists wich contain all files of their subfolders and subplaylists. In MM I have no such function... :-?

Hmmm, this is also sortable if you are using Create New Auto Playlist instead of Static one :) Reason for that is that Auto-Playlists can have playlist as Criteria.

I know that it is not intuitive as it could so I thought that http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=5418 would be nice make things easier to handle.
