Dear MediaMonkey Community!

I have updated my MediaMonkey Installation from 3.0.0.? to 3.2.0.1294 on my system. (Windows XP SP3)
Now I have some additional options in the Windows Shell. Look at the following screenshot:

Could you please tell me how to remove these options from the Windows Shell? I don't need it and don't want to use it.
I was browsing through the MediaMonkey options, but I wasn't able to find an option to remove the Shell integration.

Thank you!

I don't think it can be removed other than by manually deleting the registry entries. (for folders)

For files you should be able to remove it by removing the file associations in the MediaMonkey options. For folders this wasn't possible and I don't know if it has been fixed.

What a shame, you should put an option in the menu :-?

try tweak ui it has options to change the stuff on the context menu. i think they call them templetes on that program.

find the last free xteq program version 6. on majorgeeks.com its several years old but works on xp pro sp3. it has wizards in to keep you from doing things that make your system mess up. or you can use the advanced power users way and go in through a tree. find the option to change the context menu there are several of them that let you remove things.
add things or rename things from the context menu.

:)

Hi, new to this MM forum, but glad I am may be able to help here!

Sounds like you need ShellExView [Shell Extension Viewer]. This is, IMHO, one of the most invaluable little apps I have ever stumbled across. FREEWARE, CLEAN and ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL! [no, I have no affiliation with this app at all]

Without messy Registry tweaks, ShellExView allows you to see EXACTLY what Windows Shell Extensions are running/installed on your XP system. You can then choose which ones you want to allow and quickly and painlessly disable the ones you don't want to run.

Check it out here:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

As with all system utilities, please do some research on ShellExView. Do try to be careful to NOT go crazy and disable everything - simply disable the ones you don't recognize/want. Most documentation on ShexView advise to not alter the Microsoft extensions. However, as far as system utils goes, this one is safe, simple, small and VITAL - you won't do anything horrible to your PC [except accidentally disable any VALID shell extensions, but you can always re-enable them].

If you are like me, you want to know as much about what is running on your PC as possible. ShellExView is one such tool - you will be amazed at how many shell extensions you have installed on your system.

I discovered ShellExView years ago to cure Windows Explorer instabilities and I now install it on every XP system I touch. Am sure you know this, but MANY Windows Explorer crashes can be traced to incompatibilities/too many shell extensions running - THIS IS TOTALLY UNNECESSARY!

Trust me on this one...

TAKE BACK YOUR PC!

cheers and hope this works for you,

While I happen to agree about how useful ShellExView is (as well as all mentioned caveats), in this particular case it won't identify the entries for the Folder types as MM doesn't actually run an active extension, it only has passive entries.

Instead, use ShellMenuView (made by the same people, and equally free) which will pinpoint the specific shell directory entries, which in this instance are:

Under MenuName look for the following and disable them. Make sure they all have the Extension 'Directory' (Sorting by Extension will save time):

&Play in MediaMonkey
Play &last in MediaMonkey
Play &next in MediaMonkey

(I'll repeat that: Make sure they all have the Extension and File/Type of 'Directory'.)

Do not disable any other ones you find, and there are many, unless you specifically don't want an entry for that filetype - but this is unnecessary unless you have them associated with MM in the first place.

It should be noted that both ShellExView and ShellMenuView have specific x64 flavours, as necessary.

Kilmatead: Thanks a million for this great clarification...

After making my initial post reply, I looked up Nirsoft [seems they have a TON of products, but not sure of quality of others] and found ShellMenuView, which I didn't know about before. Because I don't have any MM extensions in my context menus , I couldn't test to see if it would be effective]. Also, I had no idea that MM's extensions are passive...thanks for the info! In truth I was unsure of the difference between ShellMenuView and ShellExView until your post.

You learn something new everyday...

cheers and thanks again for the tip/info...hope the OP sees this and it works for them.

Same Problem.

Whenever i remove the three entries in windows shell extension, MM reinstalls them on MM's startup.

Since there is no option (which i am aware of) in MM itself to disable those entries, there are two options left:

1.) Create a script which deletes those entries on MM's shutdown.
2.) Do not use MM.

Since both options are big crap... well... this thread evolved to a feature request.

In short (for copy & paste):
Please implement a possibility for disabling windows shell integration in MM.
Alternatively let the user decide on install if shell integration should be installed.

MM really should not automatically add those each time you start it unless you have set MM as the default for those filetypes at Tools > Options > Filetypes.

NoHitter: Believe you are correct here. Since I was new to the generally excellent MM, but still preferred WinAmp as my default music player, I am sure I UNCHECKED all file associations for MM to manage during my initial install. This is why I probably DID NOT have the passive folder context menu items.

I generally do this for all installations of apps which potentially will "take over" my existing association preferences. I find this behavior extremely RUDE.

This should definitely be a user-selectable option in MM during install and also changeable within the app once it is installed.

If MM does indeed reload these passive menu items each time it starts, then I guess the ShellMenuViewer utility we discuss in this thread may not help.

Partial solution:

1.) Remove shell extension manually
2.) Disable this Option Image

This works for me.

Nevertheless MM should ask if it is allowed to make such changes.

By the way, I am going to delete MM and never use it because of this problem.
Hope some developers of this software will pay attention to this fact.

I really hate software that supposes user have no right to decide about such a important thing.

you ever stop and think it might be a windows error? or setting that is putting it there? i said use tweakui in my first post above. but the XTEQ program also allows for setting things in the context menus or removing them too.

The addition of MediaMonkey to the folder shell menu's is a bug and has been noted: http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=5854 Any addition to files is due to user choice, I have no MediaMonkey additions to my files.
