Moving Files to New Location and using MM on a network
I have a huge library with the following setup: Synology 209 NAS playing through a Sonos in several different "zones" in our house. MediaMonkey is used to "tag" and maintain the music library while Sonos is used to "play" the music. Due to Sonos library size limitations, I have created a new folder on my NAS for playing through Sonos (and which it can monitor) and set this new folder up so I can read/write to it. I have spent way too much obsessive time maintaining my music library and so want to "keep" all of the tags and other information I have added to songs/artists, etc. when moved to the new location. I have been keeping the MediaMonkey DB in a Dropbox folder which can be accessed from any computer in the house.
Now, I am trying to "move" selected artists/albums to the new folder but do not "see" it as a destination option for a move.
My ultimate questions are: a) what is the best "place" to keep the MediaMonkey databse (e.g. on the NAS or in a dropbox folder); and b) to maintain the tags, etc. should I use "move" to populate the new "Sonos" folder or is there a better method to achieve my objectives; c) finally, if "move" is the best method why can't I see the NAS as a destination option? Thanks in advance for your expertise and recommendations!

Use Tools > Auto-Organize Files to move the files: http://www.mediamonkey.com/sw/webhelp/f ... enames.htm
I'm unfamiliar with dropbox, but it's not recommended to keep the database on a network location (like NAS) as this will lead to slower performance and might result in corruption of the database. Local database are the best option.

make sure you have the song tags data correct and sync'ed with monkeys database before you use auto organizer.

Or use F:\<Path> if your folder/filenames are already good enough (F:\ being the drive/location you're organizing to).rovingcowboy wrote:make sure you have the song tags data correct and sync'ed with monkeys database before you use auto organizer.

yep if they already have the data correct. but they still got to make sure it is correct.

You're missing the point. <Path> doesn't use the tags so it doesn't matter if they're good or not. It uses the existing folder/filename structure and just moves it to a new drive. Besides it's indicated that the tags are very well done.

Re: Moving Files to New Location and using MM on a network
Please pardom my technical ignorance but where is the MM program actually stored? Is it on the NAS? If so I am wondering if it is possible to use a cable directly between it and one of the new proliferation of music hubs now available from Hi Fi manufacturers or would it be necessary to run the connection through a router on a LAN?

Re: Moving Files to New Location and using MM on a network
What do you mean by MediaMonkey program?
There are 3 parts to MediaMonkey
1) The program itself
2) The database
3) The songs
Each is stored where you would install it (1,2), move it (2) and had it saved (3).

Re: Moving Files to New Location and using MM on a network
Thanks Lowlander.
At the moment I have all 3 items stored on a Dell PC which transmits the music to my music system via a USB port then a Xitel Pro Hifi Link (to convert USB to SPDIF) and then an external DAC which is incorporated into my CD player. My music is stored in WAV or FlAC. I use the ASIO4All plug in MM3.
I am trying to work out the best way to improve the sound coming out of the computer system and was wondering whether I could store all 3 of the components you mention on an appropriate NAS and network this somehow to a music hub which is attached to the music system.
Regards

Re: Moving Files to New Location and using MM on a network
You can store the music on the NAS. The database on the network tends to slow down performance and installing MediaMonkey on the NAS serves no purpose as it only runs on regular Windows flavors.
Most NAS can now stream music via DLNA to devices that are DLNA capable. This wouldn't require MediaMonkey at all to send the songs to those devices. MediaMonkey 4 however will also be able to do this.

Re: Moving Files to New Location and using MM on a network
Thanks again Lowlander. Once again please pardon my lack of technical expertise but does what you have said about MM4 suggest that it will run outside of the windows environment or have I misunderstood?
Re: Moving Files to New Location and using MM on a network
No it doesn't, MM4 still runs on Windows only, but it has DLNA capability which allows it to read tracks from DLNA capable storage devices (like a NAS) and send to DLNA capable media players like networked stereo's, TV's, game consoles, etc.
