Can MM play Flac 24-bit/96KHz?

Post by arthurb » Thu May 05, 2011 7:57 pm

I thought that it could now, but it would appear that MM cannot play these high-res Flac files. Is this true, or do I need some updated dll's or something?

I think MM 4 can.

I can play high rez in MM3 although not clear exactly what is happening

I have DAC that will decode up to 96kHz and 24 bits (USB)
It will player higher rez (192k) files and sounds good.
It reports that files are at higher rez although Iam not sure what resolution is exactly being used

I am unclear who is changing what, where - but high rez do seem to work and sound good

If anyone can clarify, it would be great

I too play tracks that are 96kHz and 24bit.
I have plenty of Vinyl LPs ripped with serious technical equipment to Flac.

Like you I am not sure what is happening.
What settings should I specify in MM3.
Is a sound card required to obtain optimum sound quality with these High resolution rips or does MM3 cope on its own...

I contacted the DAC's designer - HighResolution Technologies. My DAC should be able to go 96kHz, 24 bits but players higher sampling rates without issues.

His response as to "what is happening" was as follows:

"In answer to your question, the media player and the underlying audio subsystem are responsible for the conversion to a format supported by the audio device in use."

Of additional interest to me was the statement: "Of these two parameters [sample rate and bit depth], it is the bit depth which truly defines high resolution, sample rate simply extends the upper frequency response, but bit depth defines the quantize step size."

Thus I am still unsure if MM or Windows is "at work" and who is doing what to whom
