If that was the case the tracks would not play at all. But MM does not allow you to copy incompatible formats to the iPod.

What file type is it, anyway? iPod can play mp3s, m4a, m4p, aac, wav, aiff

It isn't the file type then, they are all mp3's and m4a's. The iPod works if I sync songs through iTunes though, so it can't be the iPod.

I had this problem too. It turned out to be caused by the bitrate.
Some of my songs have a bitrate that is not supported by the MP3 player. They are converted during the syncing, and that seems to go wrong sometimes.
I have replaced those songs with files with bitrates that are supported by my MP3 player, and this has resolved the issue.
