What is Mediamonkey COM Elevator?

Post by DERG »

Hi, first post to this forum.

What is Mediamonkey COM Elevator? I keep getting this popup when starting Mediamonkey v 4.1.13.1801. I keep rejecting it because I cannot find what it is.

It seems Mediamonkey COM Elevator is for file association. A few days ago I change the mp3 icon to my custom made icon & that's when Mediamonkey COM Elevator began popping up a start. I prefer my icon so I'll keep saying no until I find a way to disable Mediamonkey COM Elevator.

File associations can be disabled under Tools > Options > OS Integration.

When I go to Tools > OPTIONS > OS Integration and select "Associate file types with Media Monkey", I get the following message that refers me to WINDOWS 10 setting: "To change your default apps, go to Settings > System > Default apps". Still don't know what this is or how to disable.

Hi,
Edit MediaMonkey.ini and do these two changes
1. Under [System] set "NeedsFileAssocOnNextRun=0"
2. Under [Options] set "AssocExts="

That should get rid of COM Prompt.

I did this and still get the Com Elevator crap. Can't you guys code your program properly so that it doesn't annoy long time users? J River looks better everytime I open MM and some crap like this appears - which is all too often.

And so everyone doesn't have to give their usual response: Windows 10 Pro MM 4.1.15 1817 64 bit

OK lets first clear some facts.
1. I want to help when ever I can and my knowledge allows it.
2. COM Elevator crap is Windows way of blocking any third party application use features they are previously forced us to implement in order to have better INTEGRATION.
3. COM Elevator exists for 12+ years in MMW and it is well documented what it does and what represents.
4. If you do not like that to show Install MMW as portable and do not need to deal with COM Elevator crap
5. Looks can be deceiving, wont be the first nor last
6. What is better every time it only depends on preferences and fetishes you endure and enjoy
7. Even MMW is one to blame there is no reason to be rude.

Finally
8. Can you please calmly explain why and when it started especially as j river can be one of the triggers that may drive MMW fix intrusions on each start?
9. Have you even tried Portable version?
10. Have you considered to press YES for COM elevator?

I've noticed if this starts to show when I start, that reinstalling over the top but running the installer as administrator makes it go away.

Thanks, that worked for me.

- [System] set "NeedsFileAssocOnNextRun=0" was already set to 0
- [Options] set "AssocExts=" was followed by a slew of music file suffixes (e.g. mp3, aac) which I deleted.

I had been using MM for ages and suddenly today this prompt popped up and all my music had disappeared from the database. I don't know why. Maybe it was some side effect of one of the many recent Windows 10 updates.

Peke's solution above removed the prompt and I had to rescan my music files to reconstruct the database.

That behavior is strange and should not happen.

User accnt cntrl request & latest "stable" version

Post by HippieMonkey »

Hi folks:

I am currently running MM 4.1.15.1830. I believe that I upgraded to that about 1/2 year ago. For a little over a month now, I have been getting a notice that says:

User Account Control
Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device.
MediaMonkey COM elevator
Verified Publisher: Ventis Media, Inc.
File Origin: Hard Drive on this computer

Is the above seem like a typical request?
Is MediaMonkey trying to push an update?
What version?
What is the latest "stable" version available?

Thanks,

HippieMonkey

Yes it is normal when windows thinks that MMW is accessing system sensitive files or is is flagged to start in elevated mode.

Check your shortcut properties if you have run as administration enabled.

The proposed solution did not work for me either. I am a bit paranoid about malware, so I'd like to resolve the issue without giving permission to something I'm unclear on and wasn't required before. If this is due to the latest update to Windows 10, it would be nice to get some kind of notice from Ventis that it is OK to grant permission and that our version of MM has not somehow been infected. Thanks.

13 pages is too much for me to read//
:-)
The mediamonkey com elevator started showing up when I started to use WiFi to sync. Post that I have faced loads of issues and am really afraid of loosing my entire media collection or deleting the database both of which have happened to me in the past! I have been using MediaMonkey for years and I thought I could get away with paying only $5 for the android version which is essentially useless without the $20+ windows version. But I still love MM and will continue to use it. Incidentally I'm here looking for a way to turn off the prompt.. lol. If you're a freeloader like me, stop complaining and just click on 'NO' or uninstall, I can guarantee you won't find anything else like MM.

I am sorry, is this a joke? :) 5 years later and I get this error as well? Seems like several versions of windows have passed since then and you did not manage to fix this?
