You got me there! Although I listened to all that stuff in the 70s and knew I was listening to Disco when I heard it (although it wasn't actually a "genre" at the time), I've never been able to define it. Maybe it's the tempo

"Initially, most disco songs catered to a nightclub/dancing audience only, rather than general audiences such as radio listeners, but there are many aspects proving opposite tendencies as well; popular radio-hits were being played in discothèques, as long as they had an easy to follow rhythmic bass-pattern close to 120 BPM (beats per minute). Most 1970s Disco genre songs had a distinctive four/four bass drum beat."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disco

From your list I'd go for "The Bee Gees","Jive Talkin'" , "The Hues Corporation ","Rock The Boat", "Gloria Gaynor ","I Will Survive" for instance, but wouldn't include "Sam & Dave ","Soul Man" or "The Contours ","Do You Love Me". I've no idea why I used those examples but I suppose, like all music, it just comes down to what you feel.

Not much help, I know, but perhaps others more knowledgeable could follow up?

Cheers

Alan

Most of them are Disco (at least my definition of Disco) but I don't have my music with me to check.

@rovingcowboy: If you haven't got a satisfactory answer in the next week, you can send me a PM to remember me to check the songs.

yep thats what i thought too at first but then looking it over again

i see danny and the juniors at the hop. and i know that is a late 1950's song
but it has the same tempo as disco so i loaded in the list.

but i am not sure about the rest of them as they all seem to be the same beat. but i know they were not all released under the disco genera.

i just don't know which were and which were not.? 8)

Whats R&B and what's Disco? Depends on whose catagorizing them.

Whats jazz and whats big band?

Whats rock and whats vocal?

Whats country and whats bluegrass?

The genre's aren't absolute--they are there for your convenience so you can find the songs you want. If you think the Allman Brothers are disco, then you go girl, they're disco.

yes that is so true scooter but the songs are released under a genera from the record companys.

i think that is what my sister ment when she said half of them are not disco. and so i posted here.

i remember some 45's alanl that were listed as disco as a genera, so they must have started it in the late 70's

i know the above list has some disco that is very clearly disco like the songs that have disco and boogie in their names. so we can remove them i guess and the ones that are not disco but blues. or just dance songs, and then just try and get the rest of them found out.?

For me "Kool & The Gang ","Celebration" is Dance Hall rather than Disco or at least it is Disco/Dance

"KC & The Sunshine Band ","Shake Your Booty" Is for me Disco Funk

"Irene Cara ","Flashdance" Disco Dance

"Gloria Gaynor ","I Will Survive" 100% Disco

"Daryl Hall & John Oates ","Kiss On My List" it is more Pop than Disco or both
Same goes for "Carl Carlton","Everlasting Love" but more Disco than Pop

"The Weather Girls ","IT's Raining Men" Disco/Funk

Relying on the album genre or the RIAA genre is one of the lastest things you should do. In contradiction to what most people think, albums like "Trance 2006" contain more Dance than the genre that they are supposed to contain.
Music albums are commercial and made to make money. So their creators don't mind assigning it another genre, or don't even know what that genre is.

The best thing to do is to listen to real, base genre songs and then listen if other songs have similar style. If so, then it's the same genre (at least the same main genre).

A big part of your songs are oldies/soul/...

Listen to the real Disco songs and you should definately hear what disco is (well, at least the main genre).

Disco: hear the very distinctive 2nd beat (hand clap, snare, hihat, ...), in a very 4/4 constant rhythm, with a tempo not too slow and not too fast (the right tempo to do disco dancing of course!)

If you still don't know, check Wikipedia: it has some basic definition of the disco main genre and has a list of Dsico artists/songs.

Some of them aren't even close to disco...

"American Breed","Bend Me Shape Me"
60's Pop/Rock

"Danny and The Juniors","At The Hop"
50's Rock

"Free ","All Right Now"
70's Rock

"Sam & Dave ","Soul Man"
R&B

"The 5th Dimension ","Aquarius/Let The Sunshine"
60's Pop

"The Contours ","Do You Love Me"
60's Pop/Rock

"The Spencer Davis Group ","Gimme Some Lovin'"
60's Rock/Pop

"Yvonne Elliman ","If I Can't Have You"
Pop (This one's disco-ish, but I give a break to Yvonne Elliman, because I have always been in love with her. She played Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar which was a smash hit when I was 11 years old. And as far as I know she's the only one of the primary characters who played in all three of the main productions... the Broadway play, the movie and the Rock Opera (the album). She's a beautiful and exotic woman!)
