Another "Audiobook" tag question

Ok, I've seen the various threads here that talk about MM support for "audiobook" format for ipod, or lack thereof. Here's my confusion and question.

In the current Itunes versions out there, 7 to 8, you can take an MP3 or a bunch of MP3 files and "flag" them as audiobooks. You do this by selecting the files, going to "Get Info", chosing the "Options" tab, then selecting "Audiobook" as the "Media Kind" choice. Pretty straight forward AND the file is still an MP3.... so the question is why can't I do this in MM.

My current understanding is that the only way to get audiobook like functionality is to fake it with assigning Book as the genre of the file(s) (or a variation of Book) and synchronizing whereas bookmarking is enabled.

Why can't MM simply flag the MP3 in the same way iTunes is doing, assuming that IS what it is doing, to provide the proper Audiobook functionality on the iPod/iPhone/etc?

About half my library are audiobooks and I find myself forced back to iTunes because of this lack.

Isn't tagging these track with "Book" essentially the same as checking off a box?

I'm trying to figure this out as well. I have a bunch of books, lectures etc... I've marked them all with a genre of "speech" and created a custom filter. This works well enough for viewing just those items. The problem is that they are still showing up when I make the"General Music" active. So I am able to filter them in, but not filter them out.

I can't seem to find a way to make them not be "General Music"

EDIT: Ok, well I did figure out a way, sort of. I just changed my General Music filter to be everything but speech. Seems to work.

However, I'm still curious to know how to set the "Status" for tracks as this is what the default filters are looking at. It seems odd for it to be there with no way to use it.

I'm also trying to work out how to get stuff as mp3 into audio-book in an ipod using MM.

How do i get MM to mark an mp3 as an audio book so it can be recognised as such by an ipod?

Depends on the iPod model. On some of them, the only way for tracks to be recognized as audio book is to have the m4b extension on the file.

Does MM have a way to mark them as audiobook? Or can you point me in the right direction to turn them into an audiobook format?

MM marks any track with "book" somewhere in the genre as an audio book.

No idea about m4b, I guess it is just an .m4a file with extension changed to .m4b.
