Syncing and playlists on Android

Postby lordbear » Wed Apr 18, 2012 6:35 pm

I have to say, I loves me some MM. I almost gave up on 3.x but 4.x has me back, fully committed to making this work for my media management. So, after having spent SCORES of hours tweaking tags, embedding album art, playing with many scripts, exploring every setting (and its bubble help if there is one) I'm still ending up with a bit of a mess with Playlists. I dearly wish that user manuals would explain software features well, with detail, and by explaining WHAT IT DOES. But, no. No manual, no pop-up dialog, no bubble help will explain the 'result' of a setting, if you know what I mean. So, I have to ask questions and or experiment - at the risk of losing MANY MANY hours of work.

I have Windows XP SP3, MM Gold 4.0.3, Android 2.3 (on a Samsung Droid Charge for Verizon) and I sync with USB mode, not MTP. I sync by choosing several Playlists in Auto-Sync settings. On the phone, I use both the factory Music Player and PowerAMP. (Any PowerAMP users who have figured this out, I would be really grateful for your PA-specific tips)

When you sync to a device, you can sync Playlists (Options > Portable/Audio Devices > Options > Playlists ). In that Settings screen you have some other options, most of which I can mostly only guess at their function. MORE BUBBLE HELP, please.

Generate Device Playlists for:
  • Library Playlists - so I assume that this takes the Playlists shown in MM Library, under Playlists, and creates a Playlist file for each of those. From what I can gather from various forum posts, it will generate a PLA or M3U list depending on your device configuration. It will put the file(s) in the "Destination Directory" a few checkboxes below. Right?
  • Artists, Albums, Location - I'm not using, and don't expect to every use, these.
  • Destination Directory - I have \Playlists\.
  • Organize Playlists by: - I have no idea what "prefix for each playlist type" might mean. No bubble help here.
  • Force relative paths - I would assume that this would be either ON BY Default, or otherwise handled during the creation of the Playlist. The paths to the file on the PC will never have even a vague resemblance to the path on the device, right? D:\Library\Music is rather different from \sdcard\Music. Without these relative paths I would expect to have the playlist on the device come up as empty, since it would not have a valid path. Am I missing something?
  • I don't care about the last three options here.

WHAT I WANT: I want the music in my selected playlists to appear on the device. I want the Playlists to be shown in the music player application on the device.

ISSUES: In my various experiments and mistakes I have spawned a number of playlists that now show as IMPORTED PLAYLISTS. This is not desirable behavior. Since I have settled on MM, I would like to have a more seamless experience.

QUESTIONS:
  • If I manage to clean up all my MM LIbrary playlists, and manually delete all IMPORTED playlists in MM, and remove all current Playlists on the device, WHAT SETTINGS should I have, in MM, to accomplish WHAT I WANT from above?
  • In Android, is it the system media scanner that finds the playlist files, and incorporates them into the device media database? That's how the music player app 'learns' about the playlists?
  • In the Device settings, under Auto Sync, we have option to Auto-Sync files from device to the PC". This sounds like it would recognize updates music and playlist files that have been modified (new album art, or entry removed from PL, for example) and update the MM Library. (Once I get everything else stable, I will likely want these ON). So, in the case of Playlists, the Sync-er would update the Playlists in the Library based on what it sees in the Playlist that is being synced back from the phone? Powerful! And, of course, therefore, dangerous. Screw it up on the phone and you could make a mess in your MM Library)

Seems simple, but dang it, I'm tired of spending so many hours just trying to figure out what this thing does - because the documentation is so lacking (it's state of the art, I'm sure. I'm not knocking Ventis, per se. This is an industry-wide problem).

Side Note: I am using various M3U related scripts to manage all of this, and to clean up the messes that various experiments have caused.

Thanks in advance for your help, info, tips and patience for reading all of that!

I am SOOO with you! I, too, love the Monkey, but it morphs into a love-hate relationship when I try to sync. As other users have observed in these forums, "sync" is somewhat of a misnomer, as MM does more of an "export" than a true synchronization.

It seems to me that so much of the forums could be done away with if the collective knowledge about each device were more adequately captured in the Wiki area of the site. For example, shouldn't I be able to go to the Wiki, find my device (all Android devices, right?), and see there the detailed instructions on what each setting should be in order to sync successfully? But my experience with the Wiki has been frustrating at best -- it seems to be the bare bones of a Wiki, with outdated or incomplete information nearly everywhere.

But I guess that's a tangent -- your question is about syncing playlists with your Android device. I have the exact same wish list as you -- I want the music in my selected playlists to appear on the device. I want the Playlists to be shown in the music player application on the device.

But I, too, have had no success achieving this. It seems like such a simple request, but if it can be done, I don't know how. Hopefully some wise soul will see our forum and share the secret with us!

Hey! I just got it to work!

I would have sworn I had tried every combination of settings possible, but here's what just worked for me: (I'm on a Samsung Galaxy Note, Gingerbread, Win 7 Home Premium, MM 4.05)

  • I am syncing to the SD card, not the device memory
  • Syncinc in MTP mode
  • (I think all of my destination settings are default, i.e. \Music\<Album Artist> - <Album>\<Track#:2> <Title>)
  • Under Tagging, I'm syncing artwork to file folders as well as file tags (although I don't expect that this impacts playlists one way or the other)
  • Sync Playlists checked (of course)
  • Generate device playlists for Library Playlists checked. I do not have Artists, Albums, or Locations checked. It is my understanding that you would use these options if your device did not provide you with the ability to search music by artist, album, etc., i.e. primitive folder-based players.
  • Destination directory: \Playlists\
  • Organize playlists using... not checked
  • Force relative paths checked
  • Use Unicode... checked, although it created .pla playlists, not .m3u playlists, so I would suspect this setting doesn't matter
  • Extended .m3u and Linux... not checked

I hope this helps you achieve your wishlist, too!

Hi.
I was just struggling with the same. I did what you say in your last post, without success but also some settings have to be taken into acount on PowerAmp side. Maybe this was what you missed in your tests.

1- You have to set "auto scan" and "intial scanning" on settings->Folders/library->Folder/library scan. In this way, Poweramp will refresh the changes made during sync.
2.- You have to select the directory /Playlists in your Settings->Folders/library->Music Folders (apart from the folders where you locate the music itself)

I was not "rescanning" the /playlist directory, that was why I didn't find the playlists changes after syncing.

it looks like MM is fixing playlist sync on android (galaxy note and s3 are mentioned) with the upcoming 4.0.7 : viewtopic.php?p=350715#p350715

Thanks guys for your valuable posts. I tried all those settings and it did not work at first because I had screwed up some settings from my previous attempts to solve the problem. So What fixed it for me, in addition of settings above was that I checked the option to use / instead of \. this didn't fix it at first because I also changed \playlists to /playlists in the option for the location of playlists. once I reverted that one to \playlist AND check the option to use / instead of \ things worked like magic. Of course next step was to resetting the player on the android device. But it started working just 5 minutes ago on my galaxy sII
