AppleMobileDeviceSupport fails to start service

Postby cncb » Fri Jun 15, 2012 8:19 am

I am trying to sync my new ipod Touch for the first time, following the setup guide here. I have downloaded a new iTunes setup and extracted the AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi but when I install it at the end it gives the error: "Service 'Apple Mobile Device' failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services." I am running from an administrator account. If I try to start the service manually from the Services control panel it states the "side-by-side configuration is incorrect". I would rather not install the full iTunes. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

Looking at the Windows Event Viewer and searching online suggests that I need to install the Visual C++ 2005 runtime (Microsoft.VC80.CRT assembly is reported as missing) but I downloaded and installed the redistributable and it still fails to start the service.

I found and installed the latest VC++ 2005 runtime with MFC fix (with no help from Windows Update) and now it doesn't complain about the missing assembly but the service still doesn't start. It now claims that the service didn't respond to the request in a "timely fashion". Does anyone have any ideas or do I need to break down and install iTunes :( ?

I experienced similar issues (debug window) and gave up and installed iTunes.
