Sync to iPhone needs connection to iTunes to work

Updated to latest MM a couple of weeks ago, 4.06.1501. Synced iPhone, 3GS on iOS 5, for the first time today and the sync wouldn't take effect until I connected to iTunes and faked a sync. I'm pretty sure it shouldn't work this way, hasn't been the case before. Anyone else have this problem or is there something I'm missing?

Do any subsequent syncs work normally?

A subsequent sync was normal. Hope it was a one time thing. Thank you.
