Finding missing songs on iPod

Post by Remydog »

I have two large music databases that are probably mostly the same. One is on my hard drive, the other on my iPod. I would like to compare the two to see what is missing from either location so that I can selectively update each one. I fear that a straight synchronization will not work properly because the same song might have a slightly different file name in each location and as a result, duplicate a song when it should not. So I would want the ONLY matching criteria to be Artist, Album and Song Title. Even then, there may still be false positives where I have a recording of a live concert and the band plays the same song twice during the show OR where the name of the album is slightly different even though the same (using "_" instead of spaces between words, for instance).

Thank you in advance.

I managed to come up with a solution. First, I used https://www.copytrans.net/ (a pretty decent program that has saved my butt more than once) to copy all of the music from my iPod to a separate folder on my HD. I then ran MM add files function to bring in both the HD music collection and the new folder from my iPod. Finally, going through album by album, MM displays the path for each song. For the most part, each song was duplicated and where it was not, it was typically an entire album that could then be sent to whichever device was missing the album. It actually didn't take that long now that I have cleared out all the dupes from my PC. Next step will be removing dupes from the iPod and then being especially careful going forward when adding to either music database.

MediaMonkey can copy files from Apple devices too: http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... to-your-pc

And once you've copied the files to the PC you can use some of the duplicate management options to help: http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... ate-tracks

Good to know, but already finished the project, thankfully. I think it came out mostly without errors, though I made a few along the way that needed to be corrected, like accidentally mis-tagging several songs in bulk. I might, for kicks, run the dedupe again and see what it says, but I'm partly afraid of the outcome.
