But have you tried Steegy's great plugin?

If you mean the one that fetches data from AllMusic yes. But it was only an plugin for mp3tag and it wasn't (not sure) steegy's.

But as i see there is a new standalone app that builds on the WS framework. Hadn't seen before. I'll give it a try ;)
Thx for pointing it to me.

Red

Yes, that's the one we all were referring to and the one Steegy's has put a lot of work into. Try it I'm sure you'll like it!

New version (1.1) is now available from my website. Changes include...

- Added check to make sure the script is only running once
- Fixed sending the same artist request multiple times
- Added option sheet to specify whitelist or blacklist
- Added different logging levels instead of just on/off
- Added option to show toolbar button

You might want to uninstall the previous version (1.0) first because the scriptfile location has changed. This won't cause any problems if you don't, but you'll have a pointless file on your system.

Erm.. Maybe I've just missed something simple somewhere, but how do you specify whitelists and blacklists?

Goto Tools>Options>Library>Genre Finder Settings.
Choose black or white and fill out the genres comma separated...

A handy thing to include might be "aliases". For example, I don't 'believe' in the genres "Nu Metal" or "Indie Rock". And while I do believe in "IDM", I translate those in my head to "Hard Rock", "Rock" and "Electronica". (I'm trying to minimize the number of genres I have.)

So, for popular genres, it could translate.
Of course, I could include them in a white list, then when it's all done, change 'em all at once...

Great script, once again! :D

One suggestion: I'd really like that it would search the genres by albums and not by songs, so that all songs of a album have the same genre. If this isn't possible due last.fm you also could "calculate" the album-genre by looking which song-genre is the commonst.

EDIT:
I edited the code and use this now: http://ws.audioscrobbler.com/1.0/artist ... optags.xml. Works great for me since I don't need different genres on different albums (in 98%). Altough the speed could be optimized when just the artist-tag is used...

@Risser - I was going to do this in the last release but I forgot! My idea was to have the whitelist be a comma separated list of values where you could have "A,B,C=D,E" which would allow A,B,E and also allow C but translate it to D. Does this sound like it would meet your needs?

@Big_Berny - I will add two new modes to the next version; Artist and Album. The current mode will be called Track, and the new modes will do whole groups at once to improve speed but reduce accuracy. I was looking at doing the album mode anyway! :)

Great Tools Trix! I am waiting for this genre finder to get going. I have a large collection and need some sanity. the Album method will be great!

How bout making a different interface to the white/black list like a list of the last.fm genre's and then have the ability to check them off or alias them to others, add to them in list form?

There is no list of genres that last.fm use, because anything that any person adds will get added. Without this list I'm not sure how the interface can be improved?

List of genre's

I made this list for you Trix. I tagged all the songs from my library. I have about 1200 Artist and have 750 genre's.

I Extracted all these genres and imported them in Excel. I filtered them and sorted them so I'd know how many times a genre existed. Example: I have 2500 'Rock' tracks.

Now decided that I wanted to use all the genre's that existed more than once. this still makes up 330 genre's. Now I focussed on only use the music genre's. ie. Indie means independent that has nothing to do with musicgenre so instead I used Indie Rock.

some examples of genre's i didn't list:
Band names
moods
Geographical things, exception African genre.

I now have about 80 genre's. The last thing I did is rename compounded terms like Alternative Rock into Rock, Alternative. In this way I think it's better organizing. I also listed genre's that are mispelled. Such as: Rnb R&B RandB, I use only R&B.

Now I thought of someting else. I hope it would be possible to use the moods and occasions from last.fm tags in MM. I also listed these moods and occasions in the sheet (which are used more than once!).

Example: first tag of a song is 'Christmas' copy this to the MM occasion field. And then use the second tag for the genre. same for moods.

Hope I am of some help. This list might be updated but than larger a library should be used.

Thanks, but I'm not sure what you're hoping I'll do with it. :-?

I think it might be useful for the tagging. You won't have so many stupid tags and such.

I got this idea when I wanted to use 'white' and 'black' lists in the genrefinder. With my list you can do sort of the same.

Sorry Trix, i was the guest above with the white/black lists. I was thinking maybe driving off the Global Tag Chart at last.fm that lists the top tags based on usage or something.
