Error: "The playlist is not modifiable"

Hi
I migrated to a new PC and did a clean install of MM4 (4.0.6.1501), iTunes plugin (4.0.4.2438) and iTunes (10.6.3.25). All my music (~21000 files) is copied to iTunes, but only some of my many playlists are copied. For 574 playlists, I get an error 'The playlist is not modifiable':

I have no idea what's going wrong here. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you got some playlists which have the same name? Or the same name as some smart playlists in iTunes?

Thank you for your answer.

I have no other playlists in iTunes because I manage my music in MM and use iTunes only for iTunes Match.
I also made 100% sure that I do not have same playlist names (2 were same), but the error stays the same, except that the number of exceptions goes down to 201.

Code: Select all

Is there a way to see which playlist(s) cause this error?

BTW, on my old PC with MM3, the iTunes plugin worked perfectly.

Set the debug level to 2. This will give many more messages.

Has anyone encountered any issues with this plugin and iTunes 10.7?

Hi

I managed to find some culprits with the Debug mode. However, it is odd that the playlists DID NOT have the same name. They were in the same PL group with different names:

10 Trance
...Trance Therapy Vol. 1
...Trance Therapy Vol. 2
...Trance Therapy Vol. 3
...Trance Therapy Vol. 4
...Trance Therapy Vol. 5

Renaming them to 'Trance Therapy 1/2/...' solved the problem.
I'm still having a similar situation with some other playlists, but still investigating.

I accidentally deleted some tracks in MM, when I restored them their play counts were reset. I tried syncing 1 song with iTunes to see if the play count would update in MM but instead of the MM play count updating from iTunes the opposite happened and my iTunes play count was decreased to match the MM play count.

I thought if the iTunes play count was higher then MM would adjust for that?

Did you just re-add the tracks to MM; as opposed to restoring the database?

If so then the tracks would have a different internal ID to the ones in iTunes. During the sync the new ones will replace the iTunes ones as the ID numbers will not correlate (despite the titles being identical).

I think that I've accidentally realised what can cause this problem. MM allows playlists to be nested within playlists. iTunes handles this differently in that you must have a folder to contain other playlists. Folders cannot contain tracks, only playlists. iTunes folders appear as playlists which show their enclosed playlists tracks. You cannot modify those tracks hence "The playlist is not modifiable".

Out of common practice I only use playlists which either have tracks or have other playlists within them. I never have playlists which contain both tracks and playlists. I think that generally most people do this so that mostly this is not a problem.

If you construct a playlist called "fred" with 1 track inside it. Then add playlist called "george" inside "fred" with another track inside it. This will not sync to iTunes without exceptions being raised. While the exceptions are being raised there is a significant timeout - some people have concluded that their machine has simply crashed.

One day I'll fix the plugin to behave elegantly when this happens. Until then please do not sync playlists which contain a mixture of tracks and playlists.

Any word if this still works with iTunes v11?

This plug-in is killing me. It simply won't work consistently. I have Windows 7 64 bit. MM 4 (tried latest beta and latest official) and the latest iTunes. If you launch the sync (tried a million settings for the sync), the iTunes icon on the taskbar immediately flashes. Flipping over to iTunes shows nothing going on. Back to MM, sync is still struggling to work and then iTunes flashes yellow again. It does this for several minutes then throws an error. iTunes is not happy with what the plug-in is trying to do. I've been trying various tests for weeks. I got it to work once after some mysterious sequence of restarts of the apps. Since then, no dice. This looks like a simple security or communication issue between the apps. I can't be alone with this problem. I've seen others with the same behavior but the threads end without a resolution. I'm trying to sync 5 mp3 songs to keep it dirt simple and no luck. Any help on solving this one? Thanks.

Sync hangs

I've been using this plugin for a long time (thanks for all the hard work that went into it!) I started a sync yesterday. It got up to "Sychronizing iTunes (Copying 113 of 113 ...)" and nothing since. It's been stuck in this state for at least 20 hours. I have an enormous library but usually even a full delete and refresh would only take 1-2 hours. I tried closing iTunes--no problem there. If I try to close MM, it warns me that there are background processes running. This same problem happened last week--I resorted to trying to cancel the process in MM, then forcing it to close, then killing MM in task manager, then finally rebooting. Unfortunately, it seems that did something awful to my db/ini--at least, when I next tried to load MM it would work, and when I did a fresh install and copied over my db/ini I got an empty library! I restored from a week old backup and got back up to speed but now with a fresh install and my library restored, I tried syncing iTunes again and got to the same point. Any advice on how to kill the process gracefully, w/o re-corrupting my db? And any idea how to fix my iTunes sync? If I can extract myself from the current hang, I'll wipe the iTunes library and rerun the sync in debug.

Sysinfo for initial problem (last week):
Win 7x64
MM portable 4.0.3.something
iTunes 10.x

Current sysinfo:
Win 7x64
MM portable 4.0.3.1476 (oops, thought I'd gone to 4.1, have to see about upgrading to latest once I escape this hang)
iTunes 11

[Edit 2012-12-12] After 3-4 days, I came back to PC to find MM had closed without apparent notification or error. I've now upgraded to 4.1.0.1610, about to try another iTunes sync. Fingers crossed]

I'm having the same problem that is described by dav0043. This is definitely a bug between the plugin and the iTunes 11. Please look into it.

This plugin is a GREAT idea - It may have been conceived as an interim idea until MM4 could catch up to the latest IOS version, but in reality, its an ideal solution, as it ensures only iTunes does the syncing to IOS devices. This is exactly how it should be, as I would never again connect my iPad to MM4 (it royally messed it up)

So I hope the current issues with the plug-in are soon addressed. It's not working for me either. I miss not being able to use the plug-in !! :)

I am currently using :
- Windows 8
- iTunes 11.0.1.12
- IOS 6.0.1
- MM 4.0.7.1511
- d_itunes4.dll Ver 4.0.4.2438

Thanks

Just an FYI to any relevant users, it looks like there are some issues with iTunes v11 and this plugin. Try to stick with iTunes v10.
