Its a great idea! Its just a question of, time and Hosting/Cost and making sure that they are the "correct" lyrics, a quicker way would be to use a database which is already setup
There are only two ways to check the validity of lyrics or the accuracy of the contents of a site and that's to either have a valid copy of the lyrics or compare them to the original source of the song. I've been at this for 10 years on and off, it's a push regarding accuracy between the source being unattainable and the lyrics being bogus. Using lyricator I can get a month's worth of lyrics work done in a few days as opposed to scanning in the lyrics from a CD or vinyl cover which translates into being able to complete my collection in my life time.

Final point I'm not the web police but before going a crusade regarding copyright infringement it would help to have a clear understanding of copyright law and how it has been interpreted by the courts which is a completely different issue than getting sued. They can sue you if their case has no merit, I'll just ignore the moral issue as it's an oxymoron. Hey friend I freely admit to being a user one who is willing to pay for what he wants. I will give you one thing piggybacking someone's site or using open source is likely to land us in the same situation we are now. BTW I used Songbird before I purchased MM Gold, lyricator was far superior and the content more reliable for my needs at that time. I can not speak to the current database used with Songbird, I do have Winamp but removed the lyrics script it was unreliable at best

Has anyone else been receiving messages from Google when searching for lyrics through Google that your computer is sending data, which is against their agreement?

I've already conferred with one of my colleagues (lawyer) familiar with IP law. Distributing copyrighted material (be it lyrics, published works, etc) without license would be a copyright violation. This includes just "having it available" in a database accessible to others, read-only or read-write. Smaller sites offering lyrics for a limited selection (artist, a few albums) probably fall below the radar, but a database of lyrics for tens of thousands of tracks would almost certainly not.

Downloads and use of lyrics for personal use is probably covered under fair use doctrines, so no MM users who're adding lyrics to their MP3s need worry. A site that is hosting a database of lyrics, and (key point here) distributing them would not qualify as fair use.

If we did this for MM/Lyricator, we might be lucky to get a cease & desist letter initially, but I'm not taking that risk with my sites or my savings. Period. If we settled licensing agreements, I'm sure I'd have to collect funds to cover expenses, and I don't see a clear way to do that with a hosted database. I'm not confident that enough Lyricator users are willing to pay a monthly subscription fee in sufficient numbers to cover the expenses (AFTER paying for MM Gold). I think piggybacking on a site willing to let us query them is the way to go.

To reiterate my offer, I'm happy to host a PHP file that makes calls to third party sites/databases, so long as my hosting company continues to offer me unlimited bandwidth on my domain accounts. I'm happy to hold a dialog with one of the third party sites that we get lyrics from, discuss throttling, etc,. to free up a developer to focus on the technical issue of the script. My PM box is now open to other users.

Political madness .....

This is directed at any artist (and the RIAA) who thinks david's post (which I know to be accurate from having to research copyright law in my line of work) is reasonable ....

How in the h*ll does my downloading lyrics to your songs prevent you from making any money? Who in their right mind would try to sell the lyrics to your songs? Who in their right mind would buy them? It's absolutely ludicrous that we've come to this point. Maybe the words 'common sense' should be removed from the English language because this is one of the stupidest things I've run across where the music industry is concerned. Is it any wonder ordinary, everyday people become criminals because of your idiocy?

I guess the same people who by ringtones of songs they have on CD.

There are some who go further and say that music isn't the product either, it's the concerts and merchandise and music should be used as promotional material for those. Probably a good point as studios make the bulk of money on music and not the artists.

I haven't read the whole tread, but will it still work if I run it on my own webserver?

Can this script be modified to grab the lyrics through Minilyrics?
I know that minilyrics can tag the files itself, but it won't tag some file formats (FLAC, for example) and a shortcut script would be useful.

Moreover, I am not able to make MiniLyrics write into my mp3s... Perhaps I'm not smart enough for this program :D
So, this would be a quite useful solution, as far as I'm concerned.

No, that's not possible. The Minilyrics site can only be accessed by Minilyrics.

I just want to say I really enjoy using the lyricator plugin and appreciate hard work that has been put into it.
Today I tried to get lyricator working using my own webserver, but as I’m new to this it seem I’ve run into an impasse. Lyricator indicates it is searching and I see it trying different variations, but it never comes up with any lyrics (nor does it come up with "www.lyricsvip.com"). Strangely it does this whether or not the webserver is running, but it doesn’t show to be doing anything when I have the webserver running without the lyrics.php file being in the right place.
The webserver is otherwise working as it should be and it is accessible from anywhere (as far as I can tell). I edited the lyricator.js file and installed php (which already had cURL enabled).

Does anybody have any tips or tricks for me as to what may be wrong?
