How to connect to my MediaMonkey library from my work PC

Postby Cambriel » Thu May 03, 2012 9:29 am

Morning all,

So I successfully managed to set up a media server in MediaMonkey that is accessible from BubbleUPnP on my Android phone. It's working just fine remotely, and playback is great. However, I'd like to access my library on my home PC from my laptop wherever I'm at, such as at work. How do I set that up? The Media Servers tab is a little obtuse, and doesn't seem to be what I'm after.

Will MediaMonkey allow this? Everything on my network at home is able to see the server running and share music, and I have it enabled to accept external connections for my phone. I just don't know how to add that external connection as a library item in a second copy of MediaMonkey running on a different machine.

Thanks!

You'll need to allow the port in your router and need an application that can be pointed to a specific off network DLNA server (ie MediaMonkey as client can only access in network DLNA servers). There are some topics on this.

Gotcha, so I'll need some other client on my laptop. I checked the list of compatible stuff and tried Media Player 12, but after jumping through all sorts of hoops to enable streaming it doesn't detect anything off-network (why would it), and it also doesn't seem to have any sort of manual setup for me to input the server info from home.

Is there a free DLNA client that works well? The list of compatible stuff for windows is pretty sparse. It seems insane that it would be more difficult to stream to my laptop than a cellphone.

I'm only aware that some smartphone apps can do this. You'll have to search the internet if any desktop players with this capability exist (DLNA wasn't meant for this and also note that you're opening up to anybody when opening the port on your router).
