MediaMonkey for Android FAQ

Post by rusty »

EDIT: This FAQ is deprecated. It is replaced by:
MediaMonkey for Android Online help
MediaMonkey for Android Knowledgebase
------------------------------------------------------------------

Requirements & Installation:
  • What's the minimum version of Android supported?
Gingerbread (2.3). It may work with Froyo (2.2), but we haven't tested/debugged on that platform.

I installed the .apk--where's the MediaMonkey shortcut?
    It's in the App Drawer.

    What's with all the permissions?
modify your contacts - to set custom ringtones
read call log - to play custom ringtones
read your contacts - to set/play custom ringtones
write call log - to set contacts' custom ringtones
modify or delete the contents of your USB storage - to sync/download content via UPnP
Google Play billing service - to sell feature addons
view network connections - for WiFi sync / UPnP
view Wi-Fi connections - for WiFi sync / UPnP
retrieve running apps - to show/hide the tray icon
    allow Wi-Fi Multicast reception - for UPnP/DLNA
prevent tablet from sleeping - for video playback
change your audio settings - for audio/video playback
modify system settings - for audio settings
test access to protected storage - to sync/download content via UPnP
Basics:
  • What filetypes are supported?
MMA currently relies on codecs supplied with Android. For details of this see:
    http://developer.android.com/guide/appe ... rmats.html

    How do I close MediaMonkey?
Press the Android 'Back' button a few times until MMA is closed.
Note that the process will terminate a minute after it's been closed.
Playback
  • How do I shuffle tracks?
    You can either:
    1) Play selected tracks in random order using the 'Play shuffled' button in the global toolbar (next to 'search')
    2) Enable shuffle mode by touching the screen in Now Playing:Album Art view (which triggers an overlay to rate tracks, or set continuous/shuffle modes)
Synchronization:
  • How do I sync MMA with MMW wirelessly?
1 Install and run MMW 4.1
2 In MMA, click Sync Now (or Click Options > Select Sync Server)
--> The server (MMW 4.1) that you installed at step 1 will be displayed
3 In MMA, select the MMW 4.1 server
--> If your device has multiple storage locations (e.g. SD card, Internal storage, etc.), you'll be prompted to select which storage location to use
    5 Select the storage location
--> You'll be able to configure the sync rules
6 Click Auto-sync to this device
--> You'll be prompted to accept incoming connections from the device on MediaMonkey for Windows
7 Click 'Yes' on MMW, to agree to grant access rights
--> You'll be presented with a list of which content you want to sync in MMA
8 Select the content you wish to sync
9 [Optional] If you want to sync content from directories on the device, enable 'Auto-sync to the server' and choose the directories
10 [Optional] If you want to delete content from the device that isn't selected for synchronization use the 'Delete' options
11 Click 'Back a couple of times' (to get back to the menu) and then click 'Sync Now'
Note: We'll probably be tweaking the workflow/wording slightly before release.

One final point: you can also configure synchronization by hooking the device up to MMW over USB, and configuring all the sync rules there (including some rules that aren't accessible via the MMA UI (e.g. auto-conversion rules). Then when you attempt to initiate wireless sync via MMA, it'll use the profile that you created on MMW.

How do configure wi-fi sync to convert audio formats (e.g. flac to mp3)?
Conversion rules (and some other more advanced sync settings) are configured in the Device Profile in MediaMonkey for Windows.

    What does bi-di synchronization do?
It causes tracks from defined directories on the device to be kept synchronized with MMW. Metadata and playcounts for any track on either sync list are synchronized regardless of whether this is enabled.

Does it matter whether I configure my device for USB or MTP mode?
It's irrevelant to Wi-Fi synchronization, but still relevant to wired (USB) synchronization

Can I initiate a USB sync from the Android device?
    No.

I added that to the faq. Hopefully it answers your question.

If anyone can think of something else that should be added, please comment.

Thanks.

pricing info

Post by sgenterlein »

I was very excited to finally see my favorite Windows media organizer hitting my favorite mobile OS, Android. In the download thread it mentions that some features might become pay-only. Do you know which and the expected price range? Will there be a subscription model like for the Windows version?

Thanks!

State of Rando, Repeat is set to auto Hide and you can see it when you tap on album art in player or they are visible on 4x2 Widget.

Loving it that we can start playing and seeing it in action, thanks heaps for releasing the beta!

Question1:
Just curious about whether sync from device needs to be enabled to share playcount etc back to the server? Saw this in another thread, but not a response, so does seem suitable for the FAQ.

Question2:
Not so much a question, but I'm guessing we don't need to enable USB mode any more? I did first time around just from habit, but when I tried just straight MTP it seemed to work better.

Hi all,

Thanks for the questions--I've answered all of them except for the one about the pricing model for MMA, since i want to commit on that. What I can say is that we'll do as we've always done with MMW: i.e. MMA will be a product that will compete well against any other products that are freely available, and any functionality that costs extra will not be functionality that isn't a critical requirement. e.g. you can expect that wi-fi sync will cost something.

Conversion rules (and some other sync settings) are set in the Device Profile in MediaMonkey for Windows.

But wireless sync doesn't create a device profile.

EDIT
Ah, I found the profile, under Options | Devices. I was looking in the tree.
However, I am disallowed from setting auto-conversion rules because I don't have "gold". I own a lifetime-gold license, but my key is not accepted by the 4.1 install. Besides, I thought I read that the beta would have all features enabled?

So my question remains: How do I set up auto-conversion for wireless sync?

If your key isn't accepted you're most likely using the wrong License Username. You can check it here: http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... ticleid=84 Beta's don't have all features enabled, they require a License just like the regular version.

As said in the Device Profile for the device in MMW.
