Just won't sync

I am a lifetime gold license member and love my PC media monkey. I don't do anything fancy, just listen to my library. Now I have a new Essential Android phone and I've purchased the pro app to sync that library to the phone.
Nope. It refuses to connect to a server. Just spins and whirls and never gets anywhere. We have a hideous internet connection here in the sticks but I do stream video and we work all day long so thing eventually work. But I can have the phone and the laptop basically sitting next to the modem and nothing. How do I get past the "connect to a server" step?
