Any Tagging best practices guide?

Postby Plazma on Fri Oct 16, 2009 3:14 pm

Hi all,

Aside from being a huge audiophile, I work for a music company and we tag alot of audio that gets on the web. I made my boss buy a mediamonkey license and I hate the idea of putting out tracks improperly tagged. I was wondering if there was a tagging best practices guide out there for those iffy situations that often arise when an artist themselves doesn't follow standard naming conventions ?

Currently I'm concerned with tagging a two disc set properly because each disc has a unique name, but the collection has a separate name.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

not really any guide i know of but there are the disc number options on the properties of the songs. if that helps.

check with trixmoto's auto tag script and see if that does it for you. :D

Thanks, ya i've got the disc numbering down.
I just wasn't sure if I should tag the primary album for both discs as the album title or as the disc title.
So far, I've gone with the former.

me i just use the number system.

i get a multiple disk set of 2 or more. if it incluces 300 songs then the album title of the first disk is the album tilte used. and the songs get the track numbers in order 1 - 300 i will though if that many disks add the info of disk # on to the album title for those songs on the to be on the proper disk.
they still are tracks 1 - 300 but each disk has its album the same name. my folders are like this in that sitituation.

C:\my music\<artist>\<album>\<title>

thats the same as i always do but the album name would look like.
The Whole Collection of Bach in order of release date disk one.

then i just change type the whole name again for each disk and change the number i end up with 20 or so disks in that artist folder but monkey don't lose them and i don't look in the folders much if at all anyway. :)

Thanks! This is the type of thing I was looking for. I wish there was an actual standard that was pushed out there - this is a good start though for now.

That's really the problem without a real standard. Personally I don't want disc #/names in the album field. It doesn't play nice with MM, since it treats them as separate albums. As a general guide I try to keep separate data elements in separate fields whenever possible. For a general solution I'd just put the disc title in the comment (I use one of the custom fields for this).

I agree with you about disc#.
I recently did a major cleanup on my library as follows:

Single CD release. Disc# blank.
Multi-CD release. Disc# populated, but Track# consecutive for release, i.e. the way AMG shows it. e.g. if disc 1 had 15 tracks then disc 2 would start at track#16.

And yeah. No Disc/CD etc information in Album.

I use ".../<AlbumArtist>/(<Year>) <Album>/<Disc#><Track#:2> - <Artist> - <Title>" in my auto-organize mask to go along with this.
