Nothing actually changes, they were allowed to sell our data before - so what?

I'm really angry about this - we built the community, so why were they selling it?

Last.fm bought by CBS

Post by powerpill-pacman » Thu May 31, 2007 3:15 am

Last.fm has been bought by CBS for 280 million dollars. I can understand that they sold it, but i'm angry about it nevertheless. My subscription for the site is running until middle of july, but after that i'm out.
What do you think about the sale?

I don't care, as long as it continues to work with scripts that use its information.
Skins for MediaMonkey: Cafe, Carbon, Helium, Spotify, Zekton. [ Wiki Zone ].

I don't care much at all. I use it but could easily leave without it.

You can subscribe? :o and get what, for how much?

I'm not yet sure.

I'm not angry, yet. However if things start changing for the worse I will be pretty mad.

So, holding my breath at the moment.

It's not the corporations that decide that something gets bought. It's the seller that decides, in this case the Last.fm owner/developers...
However, I find it strange that it isn't Google that bought it.
Extensions: ExternalTools, ExtractFields, SongPreviewer, LinkedTracks, CleanImport, and some other scripts (Need Help with Addons > List of All Scripts).

I second that Teknojnky.

sasapuksic I agree with you mostly, but we will see what will happen.

Steegy Totally true. Re Google: They have their own service and if what I read is true Last.FM is still with original owners on top even CBS bought it. Time will tell if that was the right choice for Last.FM Users.

This rumor pops up every month or so and the last.fm staff have publicly denied selling to cbs. Not to say they haven't but it's a good bet for me since they said they didn't.

Yeah, they'd better not start making me pay.

That seems a pretty broad sweeping statement. Corporations are just people, like every other human endevour.

@MarineBrat: I don't mind corp. hard working people, but I do mind all the billions € that are bulldozing the economy globally. You have to be very naive to think ... corporations are just people. Just look what Wal-Mart is doing in you country ...

But I don't want to miss the subject.

I am scared that last.fm will lose the thing ... like Winamp did with AOL ...

Whatever ... If they blow it we will move to new rising star ... as always.

When you say all the billions bulldozing the economny you sound like you're using "opposite-speak". :) As in, that it's bad for the economy when lots of people are making lots of money. For me, I don't begrudge anyone who's making more money than myself, regardless of how much they're making.

I do have a complaint against Wal-Mart though, but the actual complaint is against the US government for awarding China "Most Favored Nation" trading status. I don't belive that the US should be stooping so low as to trade with countries with a human rights record like China's.

That I can definitely agree with. It's sad when a good company, that has been built by an individual, or group of individuals, sells to another company who is making the purchase with the bottom line being making money. When a company is run by the people who created the company there is a labor of love that is lost when the creators finally sell. Though, I'm happy for the creators who made some good money and achieved their dreams.
