improved keyword search

Post by grammalvsu » Fri Jan 19, 2007 5:31 am

I've spent a good deal of time recently setting up a new system in which I can organize tracks using keywords/tags inside of the custom3 field. for example, one custom3 entry might look like:

techno, nolyrics, slow, partymix05, mattmix06, susiemix06

So then I can just search for one or more keywords. This has the advantage over sorting by directories, of course, in that you can cross reference--slow + nolyrics, for example, if I wanted study music. I'm not using the genre fields, btw, because there aren't enough of them: tempo, mood, occasion, quality, rating=5; I want to be able to add an infinite number of tags so I can basically keep track of not only the song's genre but also any mixes I've ever put it in, etc.

SEARCH
Right now it takes too freaking long to search for my tags! To do the cross reference I mentioned, I have to go to the advanced search and set up the individual criteria. It'd be much nicer to be able to:
1. select to only search the custom3 field in the main search box (like you can currently limit it to title, artist, and album)
2. enter advanced search strings in the search box like "nolyrics AND slow"
3. one other search future that would be nice---the option to search inside of the list I'm currently looking at. So if I'm looking at the top-most "All" then it'd return the same result as typical search. But If I was just looking inside one directory it'd just filter that directory down.

So those are things I'd like to see in 3.0. Though if anyone can think of anyway to achieve comparable functionality with the current version, I'd be all ears.

MAGIC NODES
Can anyone think of any way have magic nodes to list out all my unique keywords even though there are several keywords in each custom3 field? That'd be really nice.

thanks!

MediaMonkey 3.0 will have some improvements in the search functionality that might serve.

For me, it would already be enough, if the search worked like every web search engine, i.e. AND combining the search terms.

Example search: foo bar baz

MM searches for the string "foo bar baz".
I would rather like if it searched for "foo" AND "bar" AND "baz".

That would be much more intuitive. To emulate the current behaviour you could quote the search term "foo bar baz" like you can in google.

Yeah, that would be great.

I requested some things from the search a while ago and so far one of my two search-functionality wishes has been granted in MM3, here's the link to the original topic...and BTW, i still really Miss the international character wish everyday.

I'm so happy that MM3 search functionality has been improved. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to hold off testing this new version (waiting for beta release at least), if only for this feature alone.

Still, I'd LOVE to also utilise Regular Expression search strings. I realise this is an advanced search feature, but I think it would dramatically improve search results when desired.

Oh, and like Judas (above), the whole international character issue is also annoying me silly :(

Ok, I've finally just now gotten around to trying out MM3. In general I love it, but I'm sad to see it didn't really add any of the improved search functionality I was hoping for in my post above. In fact, it's even worse in the way that you can no longer quickly limit a search to just album/artist.

I don't suppose anyone knows how to use current scripts to achieve any of the fuctionality I'm looking for?
I don't suppose anyone would be willing to write a script to achieve any of the functionality I'm looking for.....?
