Like many of the contributors to this thread I've just bought a MacBook Air. Superb piece of kit :-)

I have used MM under Ubuntu using Wine for quite some time now but I still have to use an XP machine to synch to my iPhone.

I got PlayOnMac working with MM today and it works even better than it did on Ubuntu. I can only assume that the graphics drivers are better on the Mac because it's faster and smoother on screen transitions despite it being a 1.4GHz CPU.

PlayOnMac still uses Wine under the hood so it still has the no-USB restriction. I await Wine 1.4 which has USB connections as one of it's delivery goals ... :)

I would love to see a Linux version. I don't like using wine :(

I'll just throw in my plea in here as well.

Please make a MAC version! Just switched and that's the ONLY thing I miss about my PC is MM!!!

It looks like I'm in the minority according to this poll, but I think they should just concentrate on just one platform and try and make it the best software available. It seems to me that the Media Monkey creators seem relatively small and trying to make it for other platforms, I think, would just delay the updates of their current Windows version. If Ventis Media were a bigger software company I'd be fine with it. But right now it seems like it already takes them some time to release updates to the current MM. I can't wait for MM4 (specifically MM4 portable).

Mac OS X is a a very Arts driven system when it comes to multimedia. So this would be very useful.
This a program that needs to come out for Mac.

Wondering if PlayOnMac is still working out for you? I'm just about ready to dive into the "Air" but the lack of MM is for me, like most others on this thread, a daunting spectre!

I just switched to a Mac after years of being a PC user. MM for a Mac would be excellent.

Actually I've not tried for a while - my efforts have been expended elsewhere. I've been looking at changing my d_itunes plugin to work for a Mac instance on iTunes

On a slightly different note ... it looks like iOS 5 will bring out wireless synching for the iPhone. http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html This neatly side-steps the Wine and USB issues so I may revert to some other plan.

I did a quick re-install ... Play On Mac with IE6 works with both MM3 and MM4.

MM4 was failure last time that I tried. I'm not sure what the difference is...

@Markstuartwalker:
I've been trying to get MM working with Wine, Crossover and now after your post with PlayOnMac, but I somehow can't get it to work... If you have created a working install, would you mind creating an application package and uploading it somewhere (e.g. www.ifile.it)? That would be a huge help for those Mac people like me who currently have to fire up a virtual machine to play with the monkey...

To create an .app package that can be run like any other native mac app, select the MM install in your PlayOnMac window, then click on the "package" button (you might have to click on the little arrows first to show this button). Just make sure you don't include your own MM Gold license information in case you are using a paid version.

If you can't share an .app package, could you alternatively post a step-by-step tutorial for Wine newbies like me?

Thanks!

It was very easy. From recent recollection...

Downloaded PlayOnMac from http://www.playonmac.com/en/download.html 1.3.21 and installed

Created a new application for Internet Explorer 6 (this is probably the bit you missed). Note: "Application" is POM's terminology for a Wine Prefix.

Configure a sound driver for the Wine Prefix.

Added to that application the MM3 installation and created a shortcut for the non-skinned exe.

Added to that application an MM4 portable installation and created a shortcut for the non-skinned exe.

I must point out that I haven't done any thorough testing, indeed the check was pretty superficial.

You can expect an exception to be thrown at startup. This is normal.

Edit....

I have started a new thread to discuss this .... viewtopic.php?f=4&t=58507

thanks for the instructions on how to get MM running under PlayOnMac!

I followed them and managed to get it working. The only step that is missing in your instructions is to install the MAD input plugin (which I downloaded from http://www.mediamonkey.com/addons/input-output/) - without this plugin, MM did start up fine, but wouldn't play any tracks (they were all greyed-out).

I have created a stand-alone MediaMonkey application package with PlayOnMac. Download this to give MM a spin under OSX, just unzip and start like any other application: http://ifile.it/r93vo7e (95MB)

I would have posted this into the thread that markstuartwalker created for running MM under PlayOnMac (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=58507) but that thread is locked...

cheers,

Thanks for that, I knew that running by memory was a risky approach! I do use the MAD plugin but never really understood why the MM plugins don't work. Can anyone enlighten me?

I don't know why that thread is locked ... nor how to unlock it.

I have unzipped the package but it doesn't work for me. Any suggestions?

sorry, I am also a total Wine/PlayOnMac newbie (which is why I needed your help to get MM running under PlayOnMac).
My guess would be that some of the paths in the configuration are specific to my machine..

But you already have it working, so you can try packaging it into an .app yourself and see if that works for you
