Configurable RATING tag
Currently MM saves RATING tag as "RATING MM" when a user is selecting the rating from 0 to 5 stars. Since many (hardware) players support different rating tags, and none of them support "RATING MM", would be convenient to be able to choose the rating system (TAG) between, say, "RATING MM", "POPULARIMETER" and "RATING WMP" to store in MP3 file. Can be implemented as a config option with the default value "RATING MM" to keep compatibility with the current version.
how to store ratings as POPULARIMETER instead of "RATING MM"
Any idea how to make MM to store ratings as "POPULARIMETER" tag instead of "RATING MM"?

Re: Configurable RATING tag
MM does store the value in the POPM frame. I'm guessing you're a MP3Tag using. It's that program that "intelligently" interprets the POPM field values into Rating WMP and Rating MM values. Both programs have a default value for each star on POPM's 0-100 rating scale which MP3Tag will see and display as a "user friendly" "Rating ___" tag allowing you to easily see/edit ratings from this program on a "5 star" scale instead of POPM's 101 scale. Note however that the programs will interpret ranges (at least MM will) into the varies stars.
If you see a mix of Rating MM and POPM frames from files tagged with MM, it's because their defaults for each star have changed over the year... thus, MP3Tag updated their interpretation of the true POPM values that MM uses as their Star values.

Re: Configurable RATING tag
I don't think you are correct, Mizery_Made. If you have a POPM frame in MP3 file and change the rating of this file by MM, MM will delete POPM tag and create "Rating MM" tag. Any player that would see POPM rating before would not see it after the rating change in MM, because POPM tag is deleted by MM. I was also checking tags by Mp3Tag program, you you can simply check the MP3 file in any HEX viewer, the tag is not there after MM set the rating. Some time ago MM was using POPM tag to store the rating, but not anymore. That's why I'm asking if there is any official way to configure MM to use POPM tag instead of "Rating MM". Developpers, any comments?

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Look at the MM documentation:RVA wrote:I don't think you are correct, Mizery_Made. Re: Configurable RATING tag
Thank you guys for the persistence and explanations, MM does store rating in POPM filed, and I definitely was wrong. I overlooked POPM field in a HEX view, but what really misled me is MP3Tag program which always shows POPM tag as "Rating MM", but only if the rating was modified/set by MM. If the rating is set by MP3Tag itself or Android PlayerPro, it still shows it as POPM (POPULARIMETER). I'm going to ask guys at Mp3tag for an explanation. Thanks!

Can you please post a link here with your reply to the MP3tag problem if you get one?I'm going to ask guys at Mp3tag for an explanation.
I too have been finding this very confusing!
Re: Configurable RATING tag
Adding to this conversation, configurable email address would be nice (still speaking about MP3). I have multiple users who all would like to rate files, and I want all information to be in the physical files. People have a different taste of music, and databases come and go. Files are more permanent. If MediaMonkey provided a configurable email field, the ratings could include the Author of the rating (i.e. myname@localnet). Then it would be possible to create playlists that filter by rating author, e.g. "find all files that have rating >= 4 done by user X or rating >= 3 by user Y".

Re: Configurable RATING tag
I was actually just thinking about that subject just the other day. Pretty sure I proposed it a few years back. I don't really see why it couldn't be implemented. The approach I was thinking of was regarding those that have multiple databases that the files are shared across or what have you. MM could have a "profile" system of sorts, where it could have multiple users. Each one could have it's own Database and/or INI file (which is possible now), but along with that... the ability for ratings to be stored based on each profile.
Like you say, the ability to store multiple ratings is already present with MP3s, and I imagine that since FLAC and others are more "open," it would be possible there too. WMA and other more restrictive file types might be an issue though. However, each rating could be stored as "joe@mediamonkey", "tom@mediamonkey", etc. since they're currently stored as "noemail@mediamonkey". There could be the question of which is used when no rating has been given by a specific user and others exist... I'd say use the "standard" one if one is present (meaning, set by another program, or if there's a "noemail@mediamonkey") and then display these differently from user ratings. Grey stars instead of Yellow ones, for instance.
Then, the rating field in the main list and on the properties window could by default set the rating for the current user, but add the ability to pull up a window that shows all ratings or something. And make them accessible to the search feature. Where you could select which users ratings you're trying to match, or blanket it and choose files that have any 3 stars contained in them or such.
