Burning a CD

Postby David » Sat May 31, 2003 6:48 am

Thought I'd try doing this and discovered SD still requires Nero. I thought the new version of SD was either going to include it's own software, or would support other vendors like Roxio?

The internal burner is not that simple issue, a license must be purchased, etc. However it is still planned and hopefully will be added soon.

If not an internal right away, what about support for Roxio? Obviously that's the software I have, so therein my interest.

As far as I know they don't have any SDK supporting external application burning. However, even if they have, adding such feature would require a lot of development work, which is better to spend on other topics - in future the internal burner, of course.

Burning a Cd

I use Exact Audio Copy and sometimes Nero. They both can burn a cd from a CUE sheet and the required wave files. As far as I know there are many CD burning applications that can use this method .
Perhaps this a good future option for Song-DB?

I like the idea--definitely worth considering, although ultimately this couldn't replace built-in cd-write functionality for many folks.

Burn cd disabled Nero

Postby Numbnuts » Fri Jun 20, 2003 9:24 am

Couple of comments on this.

I tried to burn a cd last night with build 506.

First off, not a bug but maybe feature request: The wizard never says whether or not everything you have selected will fit on a CD or not. No length analysis.

Secondly, when I executed the burn option a couple of dialogs came up for Nero (which I have installed) and one of them asked for a place to put image.nrg. It never did complete so I bailed out of Songs-db and then tried to burn an audio with Nero itself. For some reason nero would no longer burn a CD. It's like the driver for the cdrom could not be found at all. It would only burn to an image file. I only got Nero working again by re-installing.

Sorry, I don't have the specific steps to reproduce but then again it looks like this might be a future feature anyway. If you need steps to reproduce I can try it again and post a reply to this forum.

Re. length analysis, I agree that it's a worthwhile feature. We'll probably incorporate this whenever we spend time on enhancing the CD writing functionality (at the moment, our focus is on stabilizing the current release).

Re. the bug you experienced with Nero, I've experienced a couple of related bugs (that may be the same):
1) Burn operation never truly completes
-burn CD via Songs-DB
-cd burns properly, but after it's completed, CD burning status bar indicates: 'Phase: Writing done - Writing Lead-in and Lead-out (buffer filled 0%)'
-try to close songs-db --> 'There are threads running. Do you want to terminate them?'. Clicking 'Yes' fails to close the application.
-Any attempt to run Nero while Songs-DB is in this state fails--Nero simply doesn't start up.
-Attempting to close Songs-DB via the task manager also fails. The only way to exit this state is to reboot (after rebooting, the system is back to normal i.e. Songs-DB works / Nero works).
2) Can't burn CD with Nero while Songs-DB is running
-Any attempt to burn a CD with Nero fails silently if Songs-DB is running. Once Songs-DB is closed, these attempts succeed.

Let me know if you think that the problem you experienced is the same as 1) or 2) (i.e. was a re-installation of Nero really necessary to get it working?). Thx.

songs-db and nero

Postby Numbnuts » Fri Jun 20, 2003 2:20 pm

I did do a reboot (a couple of times) and Nero still wouldn't burn to disk.

I'm sure there was a setting in Nero that I could have played around with to get it to burn again but it was late and I was tired and re-installing was faster.

songs-db and nero

Postby rusty » Thu Jul 03, 2003 8:58 pm

There were a couple of issues in previous builds which may have caused conflicts with Nero, one internal to Songs-DB, the other relating to the defaults used for the Nero 'plug-in'.

Both of these issues should be resolved in Beta 4.
