1348 Worst realized toolbars & tabs ever

Post by ZvezdanD » Wed Feb 09, 2011 4:22 pm

Menu bar cannot be on the top if some toolbar is shown (EDIT: until restart?). Tab cannot disappear when there is only one. There is ugly black background around tabs. Menu bar is anemic, unskinned, plain gray.

Here is your so-called the preservation of vertical space:

OK, sorry, I didn't see that post. However, other issues that I mentioned remain.

This is what people were requesting and it's just the first iteration of implementing these requests.

Well, I haven't requested from them to put the tab permanently displayed, even if there is only one. In fact, I posted request in September much before the first alpha to not do something like that: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... 33#p271233

You're not the only user. I haven't requested it either (and voiced my dislike on it as well), but others have and they apparently got their way.

It is a nice improvement for Vista/Win 7 because the tabs and menu items are in the titlebar, but for XP it has made things worse.

The current result of poll "Ability to show all Tabs Toolbar even only single Tab is used":
Show Tabs always (used as default one in) - 6
Do Not show Tabs unless multiple tabs are used - 10
Make this configurable in Options - 86

As you could see, there are more users which don't like such implementation, and much, much more users which would like that optional.

In next build (1352) there will be an option to display or not display the tab-bar when there is only one tab.

OK, I was wrong. 1348 is not the one which had the worst realized toolbars & tabs ever - it is this new 1352 version. MM developers, please could you tell me what is a point of this new option which you have added ("Always show the tab bar"), if we cannot place toolbars in the same row with the menu bar as before? We still cannot preserve the vertical space when we have just one tab displayed as we had before:

Beside of that, if user has the mentioned option turned off, there is not any possibility to add new tab. 1346 at least had that possibility choosing the related option from the context menu by right-click on some node. Is it so hard to add the option "Add new tab" to the View or File menu? For example, Firefox and Total Commander have such option in the main menu.

By the way, not so related to this thread - MM developers, you need to have all options from the context menu implemented as well in the main menu. It is bad practice if you have some option implemented only in the context menu for many reasons (e.g. I am wondering how you could get the context menu on the UMPC/MID/tablet computers which have the touch screen instead of the keyboard and mouse).

You can middle click on any node to open in a new tab.

Hotkey to open new tab is requested here: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... lit=ctrl+t

I'm happy that they allowed the tab bar to be hidden. I doubt I will use tabs a lot so I don't need to see this. I do wish that all could be located together on the same bar, but my browsers also don't allow for this.

Thanks for information about middle-click and hotkeys, but I am not asking that for myself - I don't need tabs. Hotkeys and middle-click on some node are not as intuitive as it is the menu option, especially not for beginners. And as I mentioned, there are situations when an user: cannot use a mouse, or don't have the middle button on it, or has a PC remote control with the limited set of keys which cannot simulate Ctrl+T, or has a touch screen computer where press on the menu is faster then calling some software keyboard, or ...

I cannot see a point to hide the tab bar if I cannot use the space which is occupied with it. You see, I am not asking anything which was not already there in MM before. MM3 and even MM4 until 1346 had a possibility to place toolbars in the same row with the menu bar. By the way, I think you should use Firefox browser which allows that. ;)

"File -> Open New Tab" seems like a pretty standard way of accessing a new tab in programs which support tabs. I guess it would make sense under the View menu, but given the standard already in place, it would probably be best under File.
