Blurry fonts

Post by stax76 » Sat May 08, 2010 7:37 am

I bought a new 23" monitor using the native 1920x1080 resolution with font size at 150%, the Win 7 UI and most applications have crisp fonts but some applications including MediaMonkey have awful blurry fonts, I have no clue why is that but I'll find out, so far I found the following applications to have blurry fonts:

MediaMonkey
Notepad++
StaxRip :-?

I'll probably find many more.

I figured what the problem is, MediaMonkey lacks high DPI awareness, google for Windows 7 high DPI.

Are you using default font settings in MediaMonkey? I'm not getting big fonts, although many applications did, maybe I have to restart Windows.

No matter if you enable XP scaling mode or not there are quirks and fixing them is likely gonna be a major pain and break scripts.

Can someone else confirm this issue with DPI at 150% and Windows 7?

You can read everything in the MSDN document, the blurriness is caused by DPI virtualization, this can be disabled either globally or per application so XP mode scaling is used but as you can see in your screenshot there are other issues, big fonts and clipped text. Many other applications have very similar issues, it's not real dramatic but still a flaw, one that is painful to fix.

But not that big/bold, take a look at other ListView's like Explorer or uTorrent.

They all looked that big and bold. Remember I'm not on Win 7, which is why I asked if anyone else can reproduce the same on Win 7.

DPI virtualization mode at 144 DPI, blurry due to nature of DPI virtualization

Image

XP scaling mode at 144 DPI, fonts more big and bold then other applications in this mode

Image

high DPI awareness at 144 DPI, that's how it's supposed to look like

I finally found out there is a font size option in MediaMonkey.

just?
it is on the same page the skins are on in the options.

but there is an app to use to fix the fuzzy font issues on flat screens. the issue is caused by cleartype. i was reading about it in the ati software on my system. so you might want to google for font issues caused by cleartype. or go to the ati site and see if you can find more about it there.

I think the app you mean is included in Win 7, that wasn't the problem, it was the DPI virtualization.
