Music moved by addon? Where is it?

Postby soundsxtreme.ca » Fri Mar 02, 2012 8:50 am

OK so I had lots of strange SQL errors and such scanning my music library yesterday... so I uninstalled and then installed MM again fresh, and made sure the DB and ini files were deleted so it would be fresh.

Before I uninstalled, MM showed I had over 8500 music files. AFTER reinstalling and scanning, it shows 7537 music files now.

I looked at the music folders, and over 150 FOLDERS are now EMPTY! I have NO IDEA what happened to the music between the two scans.

Here's what I did between the first scan (>8500 songs) and the scan after reinstalling:

1.Updated tags from filenames, then from the web (napster and amazon)...
2. ran scripts:
- Remove prefixes
- Case checker
- Genre finder

I have not run anything else to do with these files, folder or music at all. And it happened rather rapidly.

The folders affected are the FIRST folders in the directory... about 150 folders were emptied.

It's not in the deleted files folder (recycle bin), so I've no idea where they went at this time.

Anyone have a clue?

OK - THIS is messed up! I just scanned for MP3s and found MUCH of my music RELOCATED into MyMusic folder!

WTF??? I didn't want anything to mess with my arrangement of music! How the hell did that happen?

NOW I find in Cut and Paste back to my own music folder, that theres over 10,000 music files to be moved.

HOW THE HELL DID THEY GET MOVED IN THE FIRST PLACE??? Anyone know?

mm wont do this until u tell to do it.
maybe u clicked the wrong icon and organized files instead of rename from file name and aborted it?
just a possibility

Of course it's a possibility. But isn't REARRANGE AND MOVE YOUR LIBRARY a pretty SERIOUS COMMITMENT that SHOULD require a confirmation?????

I've lost DAYS of work on organizing my library.

When I installed the program, it didn't ask me if I wanted to PREVENT moving of files. It didn't ask if I wanted to CONFIRM important decisions, like MOVE FILES and rearrange them.

WHY would you have such a powerful feature installed and not make it apparent? This is not a little thing - this is a SERIOUS thing when all your music is moved and sorted by artist. If ANYTHING I would have had it sorted by genre, but since the genre script doesn't really work well (does not fill in the missing blanks as I'd hoped), I prefer not to do any sorting at all.

So, if I DID click the wrong button somewhere, WHAT button did I press I wonder? Can I UNDO it?

Why did it assume I wanted to place my music in MyMusic folder, when I had it stored on another drive, and another folder?

I'm sick to my stomach over this... I want my music grouped by CD as it was before.

AUTO ORGANIZE FILES <--- That one, the button right underneath Auto Tag from Filename?

SERIOUSLY? A simple misclick can your entire library? NO confirmation or warning? NO configuration? No way to PREVENT misclicks?

Please tell me how to REMOVE or DISABLE that button! It's FAR TOO DANGEROUS to have without any warning attached to its use! Over 10,500 songs were MOVED and REORGANIZED... following which I had the SQL errors, obviously a result of MM moving files to my operating system drive and filling it up.

I realize why it stopped now too - it filled up my hard drive! Drive C is for program files - I don't use MyMusic folder. But MM decided that was where to move the files anyway, as a result of my misclick. So it filled my drive, stopped auto-arranging, then gave me tons of SQL errors due to the hard drive being full.

ATTENTION PROGRAMMERS:
1. You have a LETHAL button that rearranges and MOVES files to a location, without any user input as to the new location
2. There is no confirmation on the LETHAL button
3. The auto-arrange does not check for enough drive space before beginning the operation
4. The auto-arrange does not give any WARNING that it is filling up the destination hard drive
5. SQL errors occur as a result, whereas these program errors COULD and SHOULD have been prevented (see 3 and 4 above)...

All in all, a serious on the programmers' parts.

I SERIOUSLY REGRET pressing the wrong button - I can only assume that's what happened now.

I moved the files back... am scanning with MM now.

I updated the OPTIONS for auto-arrange, and limited the genres. After it indexes, I will be using the auto-arrange purposely, in hopes it will fix the damage that I did when I misclicked yesterday. What a mess I've made...

frustrating issue... i never let any app flinger my folders.

if all is tagged well u could have organized the files back to the other drive using the monkey, u just have to insert a folder mask that suits u and veryfy in the preview that all is going as aspected before hitting the go button
an example is
d:\Music\$if(<Album Interpret>,<Album Interpret:1>,<Interpret:1>)\$if(<Interpret>,<Interpret>,!divers)\$if(<Album>,$if(<Jahr>,<Jahr> ,)<Album>,)\$if(<Song#>,<Song#:2> - ,)<Titel>

another hint when u copy by hand and plan on using the find missing/moved files feature.
delete the old entries from the mm database (archive > files to edit > dead entries) to avoid possible issues (potential messes up some tracks that have same hashes but are indeed different tracks).
ignore that if u manually move the files and normally add them.

Auto-Organize Files shows you a window with new and old paths before you click OK to do an Auto-Organize. This should be enough to grab your attention on what will happen. So it is incorrect to state that simply clicking the button will move your files.

You are correct - a dialogue box did appear. Unfortunately the warning and settings seemed VERY much like I would expect for auto-tag from file name. In other words, I thought I was looking at the dialogue box/warning for auto-tag from file name.

I SHOULD have been paying closer attention, however it's still ridiculous to put the button right there where it can easily be misclicked. And there SHOULD be a BIG RED WARNING window IMHO - it's too serious a matter not to be intrusive and obvious.

Maybe a 100 warning dialogs before you can do it (and still someone would use it improperly)? It would be a lot of hassle for users if more steps were required. When using programs you simply need to pay attention. We've probably all failed to do this at some point with some program, but I think this is on the user. And in this case it wasn't a bad thing like file loss that happened. Re-applying Auto-Organize Files can fix the situation in this case (others have been less fortunate).
