Mediamonkey Freezes at Launch if iTunes is Uninstalled

Postby Jinsoku » Wed Nov 05, 2008 7:41 pm

This is a consistent bug I've noticed when updating between versions of iTunes. If I completely uninstall iTunes/Quicktime and attempt to launch Mediamonkey, it will forever freeze on launch at the spashscreen. I can wipe all knowledge of MediaMonkey from the user profile, uninstall Mediamonkey, reinstall it, and it stays dead. However, reinstalling iTunes causes MediaMonkey to resume normal operation. I'm assuming that something left behind in the registry by iTunes/Quicktime is the cause of this, and MediaMonkey is attempting to utilize it not realizing it doesn't exist anymore. Maybe with the AAC codec access it does?

I'm wondering if other folks that have reported MediaMonkey freezes may have done something similar. I've recreated this on two machines, so I'm assuming that others should be able to recreate these results.

Systems that this has happened with are Vista/2008 Server, with all software on current versions except iTunes. Recreated results in both 3.06 and 3.03 of MediaMonkey.

It will start up fine if you rename d_iPhone.dll to d_iPhone.dll.off (can be found in the Program Files\MediaMonkey\Plugins folder)

He's right. I changed the file name and it worked. Not that I use IPhone but does that disable some function after the name change?

It just disables the iPhone sync plugin.

I ran into this a little while ago with MM 3.0.6.1190 and found the solution here - to delete or rename d_iPhone.dll.

The problem is still there with MM 3.0.7.1191. I just installed MM 3.0.7.1191 (on Vista) and ran into it again. Unfortunately my short-term memory wasn't good enough to remember the solution so it took a few iterations of install/re-install until I found this thread again.

This should be fixed when 3.1 is released.

I was having the same problem. I found out it is a quicktime problem. When you uninstalled I-tunes it messed with your quicktime, since they are usually downloaded and installed together. I fixed the problem by downloading and installing just quicktime. Then install MM. It fixed mine.

Thank you for solving this problem, I had reached the stage where I was about to give up and uninstall my beloved Monkey.
