I've been using MM for many years and I assumed that MM did this automatically when you changed any tags?!

6. use mediamonkeys auto orgainzer feature you find on the menu bar, tools drop down menu. it is a manualy started one.
after you get your library set up with that one you can use the automatic one in the options menu's of the gold version of mediamonkey.

what does this do? i've never had to use it?!

It does (unless you tell it not to), but it can fail once in a while. Use the Library > Files to Edit > Unsynchronized Tags node to identify tracks that haven't had the tags saved to the files and use Tools > Advanced Tag Management > Synchronize Tags to save database values to files for selected tracks.

I assume he's talking about Tools > Auto-Organize Files and Tools > Options > Auto-Organize. The latter automatically we organize files when you scan tracks in or change tags, the former is manual: http://www.mediamonkey.com/sw/webhelp/f ... enames.htm

Cheers lowlander. I always assumed synchronise looked for errors between id3v1 and id3v2 tags! Just goes to show that even after 8 years there are still things I don't know

It does so too, but the more important feature is comparing database values against the files, especially as many file types don't use ID3.

Having come to the end of my rope with the bloated, buggy iTunes 11, I am considering ditching iTunes, and MM seems to be the App people like the best, particularly those with large music collections.

My questions are:

Are there any recommended procedures when installing MM as a replacement for iTunes?

Is there any reason to keep iTunes installed after installing MM (such as handling podcasts and audiobooks, for example)?

Does any information that I have labored to put into iTunes like "Grouping" and "Genre" disappear?

I buy my downloaded music from Amazon and emusic. Both of these has a download manager that I had to install which automatically syncs to iTunes. Do I lose this convenience by switching to MM?

You want to keep iTunes if you sync with Apple devices. MediaMonkey can handle Podcasts, and audiobooks, but not audible audiobooks (due to licensing costs).

Where iTunes follows industry standards the tags should be read by MediaMonkey. However Apple doesn't always follow industry standards so for example Artwork generally fails to come over due to iTunes using a proprietary method to store Artwork.

You can just install MediaMonkey while leaving iTunes as is. This will allow you to do a test run to see how much work the conversion will be.

New posts (even in old threads) are always put to the top of the forum. So what you said about making a new post for your question really is not correct. In fact it is better to post in an older thread, so relevant information can be found in the same place.
