Color me stupid, but how to you bring up the UI? I installed it and it runs, but I can't figure out how to get to the settings screen you show. I'm new to MediaMonkey.

The settings will be found under "Tools" --> "Options" --> "Library" --> Genre Finder Settings.

To actually use the script, you can either access it under Tools --> Scripts --> Genre Finder, or from the Genre Finder toolbar button.

Has anyone successfully tagged anything by AC/DC?

Everything looks great, but it cannot find them. I've pulled them up on Last.fm and everything should match up, but no dice.

The only way i can see to parse a returned genre effectively is to split the returned genre as many times as necessary.

Whilst I understand exactly what you're after, I've had a look and it's just not going to be possible. I'd have to totally rewrite the script and I simply don't have time to do it, sorry.

I have been desperately trying to get this going. I'm not sure where the problem is, but it always looks like it's working and just returns with "no suggested changes". This is hard to believe when looking up The Beatles, and the genre is either empty or unknown. In the log, I see (timeout) under every entry with log level @ 4 "Timing".

Under Update Lists I have Genre selected and a pasted comma separated list that I copied from the log.
Genre - White List - acid rock, acoustic, acoustic guitar, acoustic rock, adult alternative, adult contemporary, etc.....

I've tried turning off my firewall completely but still no joy. Is there anything else anyone can think of to try, or how to troubleshoot further?

@akovia, I'm new to this too, but I think you need to go to "Tools->Options->Library->Genrefinder settings", Change "Run Mode". You will get different results for different settings here - Per track tags, Per album tags or Per artist tags will obviously be quite different. Say you're tagging Frank zappa tracks, as an artist he spans a wide gamut of tags, a single album or track may be just a few of these tags. Etc. You should try the various settings to see which results are most to your liking. This is just a guess, since I just started using Mediamonkey in general, and this script in particular, and I had the same behaviour until I figured out the different run modes.

Actually, I'm here to make a suggestion related to precisely this functionality, coming soon.

I have a couple of suggestions for future improvements of this script!

1. I find that to get good tagging I have to go into Genrefinder settings and change the "Run mode" options frequently. Obviously the resulting tags can vary a lot between the different options (see my above post as well), and in order to get the most appropriate tags for my personal preferences as regards collection organization and use, I have to pay close attention to the results. MY SUGGESTION: make available three different buttons for Genrefinder - One for each run mode, Artist, Album, Track. Differentiate them with icons and tooltips.

2. My genre black- and whitelists are quite long now, almost 600 whitelisted tags based on Wikipedia genre listings and a few of my own. For better editing, I would appreciate a "from file" option, so the comma-separated tags can reside in a text file. Same for blacklist, although I find whitelisting much better.

1) I could do this, although it would mean complicated the way the script is currently fired and I'm not sure everyone would want three buttons clogging up their toolbar (including me).

2) This was made available in version 4.0...

To specify the whitelist in a file make sure that the file contains the comma separated list all on the first line and in the whitelist field specify the full path prefixed with an "@" character, something like "@C:\Music\GenreWhiteList.txt".

Thank you for replying, and considering my suggestions. I have little experience with VB scripting, but love to learn, so I'll see if there's a way for me to write my own script to call specific runmodes, bypassing the saved settings. Looking at your script right now...

Can someone post or PM me the full white list that he has? I'm most interested in a white list for the fields 'Occasion', 'Mood', 'Country', 'Language', and' Instruments'.

Please help me with this. I build up long lists, but with the latest install of MediaMonkey it reset all my settings. Lost all my settings for Genre finder including the white lists. So I hope you my MM-friends can help me a little, cheers

Thanks for the great scripts, and I appreciate the work (even on this one) but the genres it pulls from are just as much of a mess as the user's genres already are if they need this script. Example: I have about 20,000 songs. My genres are basically useless to me. I haven't been keeping them up or paying attention to what they rip as, and I ended up with about 950 different genres. So I cleared them (as I said they're useless to me now so I had nothing to lose) ran this script, and I ended up with about 1,100 different genres including many with only one song, and some of them weren't even genres, such as "epic win" and just the letter 'a'. Also many of your songs will end up with decades as the genre, (90s, 80s etc). Not the point of the genre field. So while it's a great script/idea, the database of genres from which it grabs is too convoluted. Still looking for a script that will write only the major genres, like you'd see in a record store. There's a reason they don't use too many sub genres in a record store.. because it doesn't help you organize anyways.
