Sync stuck on "Preparing list of tracks"

Postby peppergomez » Fri Aug 26, 2011 11:36 pm

I have 327909 mp3 files and plugged an mp3 player into MM for the first time (a Cowon X7 160GB player). MM recognized it and I have begun the sync process, setting the priority status to highest.

Thing is, the process has been in the "Preparing list of tracks" stage for several hours. I'm beginning to wonder if it's stuck, or if the size of my mp3 collection just means it will take MM many hours to auto-sync a selection of music.

Thoughts?

Edit- OK, it's definitely not working. Left it running all night and it's still in Preparing list of tracks mode. WTF. Is there any sort of configuration setting I need to make to get this to work?

I'd presume that it's stuck.

Yeah. I've tried several times now with the same results.

How long on average, if applicable, does MM take to prepare a list of tracks, and is it primarily dependent on how large the library is?

I am wondering if MM is in a sense "choking on" searching through about 2TB worth (190+K) of music. And if it just cannot handle it. Maybe the developers of MM didn't envision it handling libraries this large?

Syncing via the MTP protocol is not efficient in MM3. It has been revamped in MM4 (now in beta) and I think performance should be much better in it. I would try with MM4.

Thanks for your reply. I guess once MM4 is out of beta, I would need to purchase a new license key? I am not too enthusiastic about spending more $$ on MM so I would probably want to stick w/ MM3.x. (Although if the beta of MM4 is stable, I might switch to it).
Is there a better way to sync in MM3.x other than via the MTP protocol?

PS- in case it matters/determines what protocol I should use, I am trying to sync to a Cowon X7, which is recognized by Windows 7 and by MM as an HDD device.

Thanks again.

Yeah you could instead sync as mass storage. http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... rticleid=2

Thanks for the link. I followed those instrucitons but am unclear about what MM lists as the Available USB Devices after completing these steps:

"If you wish to then configure the device to use the Generic USB Mass

Storage Device plug-in, click on that plugin and then 'Configure', and

on the Device Configuration Tab, click 'Find Device'."

MM lists two Ports, but I've no idea which (if any) is my Cowon X7 player.

The two: "Port_#0003.Hub_#004 (VID_1058&PID_1130)" and "Port_#0004.Hub_#004 (VID_0E21&PID_0930)"

Needless to say, that is more technical than I expected, so I can't determine which applies to the Cowon. It's worth noting that the Cowon is recognized by both Windows 7 and MM as two discrete drives: it has a 148GB HDD drive component (Drive E:) and a 1.63GB Flash drive component (Drive F:).

So maybe these two Port listings refer to these two? Not sure which is which though.

Also, after completeing all those steps, the Cowon is now recognized as a hard drive. I tried to sync to it (Drive E:) but cannot in MM. Does MM not allow autosyncing a selection of files to a hard drive, but only to a portable music player? I don't want to have to manually select the files, but prefer to have a random selection copied from MM to the Cowon.

Just choose the drive letter and ignore the "Find device" button.

OK, but will that solve the lack of sync that I encountered? I'll try, but I'm thinking not.

OK, thanks. You are correct. I have now renamed New Device as Cowon--it is Drive E: and I see in the options that MM lists it as a USBMass1... Plug-In File.

I am auto syncing it now...MM is still however in the (Preparing list of tracks) prep mode, at about 10-15 minutes in. Given the size of the library (1.8 TB about, 190K files), this isn't surprising.

If it's still in this mode in an hour or so, I will begin to wonder.

Anyone have any ideas how long MM should reasonably take to be in this "(Preparing list of tracks)" mode with a music library of this size?

Edit- over an hour later and still preparing list of tracks. Might leave it on all night and see if it ever does so.

Reviving this older thread...still unable to sync my Cowon, and also unable to sync my iPod, even though I followed the steps in iTunes to allow the iPod to sync with MM.
Also, I deduped my music collection so that it is now MUCH smaller- about 92,000 tracks instead of about 350,000. (I had wondered if MM was choking on so many tracks).

Basically, MM still stays stuck at "preparing list of tracks" for hours on end, with no sign of progress.

I am using version 3.2.5.1306 of MM.

I would really like to get sync working b/c I have 3 ipods and the Cowon, and it's bumming me out not be able to have MM assign a random music selection to each one. MM just emailed me about buying v4, but (as much as like MM in other respects), I would be more inclined to switch back to iTunes with all of its bloat (blech!) if I can't get the sync function working properly.

Thanks in advance to any suggestions.
