DLNA Sharing- what am I missing??!!

Postby JulianD » Fri Dec 02, 2011 10:41 pm

Having no luck getting MM4 gold to play nicely with my Samsung TV.
I can browse to all the video files (no thumbnail previews though), but when I try to play I get "Not supported file format" error.
I've tried using both "incompatible video" & "any video" rules in the auto conversion settings, but nothing. MM CODEC pack purchased & installed, as is KLite.
I'm wondering if there's something simple I'm missing. I've tried a few different media server products, and the only one I've managed to get working is Serviio. (I just point it at my video folders, and it works! No further configuring required.)
Haven't tried music, just interested in getting video working.

It really depends on what types of video files your TV supports playing. You'll need to fine-tune your auto-conversion settings based on what types of files your TV can play. MM can only auto-convert to WMV videos at this time, so if you TV can't play those, you'll have to disable video conversion altogether.

You might want to try with MPEG2 or MP4 files and make sure they're not converted. These 2 formats play without issues for me on my Samsung TV.

Thanks- I've done some more checking on other forums. It seems the DLNA standard is very limited, and Samsung have implemented it by the book. It's a shame, as there is no limitation with the TV itself- I can play nearly all of my files via thumb drive. It's only when streaming there's a problem. The MPEG2 files do play fine unconverted, but 99% of mine are AVI.
Nevermind, I'll pop Serviio back on. Hopefully MM will have an update that will allow transcoding to the DLNA stnadard!

Are you saying that Serviio can stream the AVI files as is to the Samsung? I'm not sure if Samsung supports them (mine doesn't) and I actually found that my Samsung TV has the most issues where other DLNA devices have no issues.

No, it transcodes the files on the fly- presumabely to MPEG as supported by the DLNA standard.
I just find this quite frustrating, as the TV can obviously play the native files- there are no issues if i just put them on a thumb drive & plug into the TV. There are all sorts of gripes about Samsung DLNA in other forums, so just hope MM do as Serviio did and include an MPEG option in future builds.

USB file support is often better than DLNA file support. In this case MediaMonkey can't convert to MPEG2 (I have requested it though) as this would add cost due to licensing, but you should be able to convert to MP4 (MediaMonkey Codec Pack needed) if I'm not mistaken.

I did purchase & install the MM CODEC pack. Should that transcode the files on the fly? If so, perhaps there's a setting I'm missing? If I need to convert the file first THEN stream it I really can't be bothered though- I'll just keep using Serviio.

I'm not entirely sure here. Under conversion rules you can setup conversion and it will do it on the fly. But I can't select any format to convert to here, so I don't know how/if this is supposed to work.

I just got Samsung TV and have not seen the problem you are having with AVI files.
I am running Win7 and have installed K-lite Full and FFshow codecs.

I have also installed Real Alternative and in_trta.dll.

The only file problem i have is with old files.
Old WMV file that are WMV7 would not play on the TV so i converted them to MP4 without any issues.
Old .rm files that were RV03 and cook audio would not Play on the TV and would not show correctly in the MM. I installed the in_trta.dll and they play in MM but still not on the TV. I can not convert them either.
Other newer .rm files RV04 type play fine in MM and on the TV. Same with newer WMV files that are WMV8 or 9.

This is a edit for my post above. I can't edit in that post as it was before i joined the forum

I have found that some of my .mpg file would not play/stream to my new Samsung TV with MM4.
When i looked at these file with mediainfo program, i find that they are bitpacked mpg files.
If i re encode them then they stream fine.

I also find that .MKV files dont seem to play either even though the TV should support them.

I did not have any problems with these files using mezzmo.

Same thing here my Samsung PVR plays Avi only with Media Monkey but not MKV. The same files play files play fine using Mezzmo with no conversion.

I've all but given up trying, though I appreciate the suggestions made thus far. I'll keep lurking in the forum in case someone comes up with an answer, and just keep using Serviio.

Hi, this was fixed in the past build (1377) and confirmed via the forum link viewtopic.php?f=6&t=57854#p298425 [^] that MKV works with Oppo BDP-93 and WDTV, it makes me think that the particular MKV really is not playable on your device. Are you sure that the Mezzmo doesn't make any file conversion when serving the MKV? Could you try to serve the same MKV by using other server (like XBMC, Twonky, WMP, tVersity, Servio,..) to confirm my speculation?

Hi!
I hope you're still checking here too. I just had exactly the same problem, my SamsungAllShare would play Matroska files on my Samsung TV, but for some reason, it didn't want to play when I used MediaMonkey as a DLNA server. (I only now realized MM can act as such, and am ecstatic, because AllShare is a sluggish piece of ...)

Anyway. The solution is as simple as it is hidden. At least it was for me. MM simply didn't realize / assume / subsume that my TV could actually play .mkv files. So I had to tell it that it's okay. Here's how:

Tools > Options > Media Sharing > Check off both boxes above, then:
'Add Shares' by enabling it and then starting a device (e.g., your TV) that would like to connect. Once that's been given permission to do so, and once this is populated with something like "Server Name" = "MediaMonkey Server", some random IP Port and "Status" = "Running", click on that line. I had some initial trouble, just make sure you click on it long and thorough enough that the buttons "Remove" and "Options" become available.

Click on Options > Auto-Conversion > Set formats. (Very likely you'll see that .mkv and/or whatever is not playing on your device is not yet in the list of supported formats.) In the new window, click on <Add supported format...>
Then: Content > Video > Tab named Video

Here check off all formats that you KNOW your device supports. If you are able play any format with a different DLNA server/software and your device (TV), then I'd think it's pretty safe for you to check those off. (If you pick a wrong one, I doubt your TV will explode. But I don't guarantee anything! ;-))

I didn't change anything in the lower part of the tab for any format. I simply clicked OK in all the windows that had popped up, until I was out of all Options dialogues.

Et voilà: everything worked! I hope I could help. If not you, maybe someboy else with a similar problem.
