Default program changed at MM4 startup

Postby Otello » Thu Dec 15, 2011 10:28 am

I have a boring problem with MM4; I do not use MM as default program for video, so after installing MM4 I change the default video player to VLC using "open with" for every video extension (.avi. mpg, etc.).
The problem is every time I start MM, apperently it write again the default file associations, so the next time I click on a video file, it is played by MM.
I think MM may be associated to a file extension without forcing to be the default program...

Tested on 3 PCs, with Win 7 x86 and x64, with 1460 and 1461.
Step to reproduce the problem:
- MM4 installed
- .avi or .mpg files associated with VLC as default player
- click on a .avi or .mpg file in Windows Explorer: the file is played by VLC
- start MM (it doesn't matter if you exit or not from MM)
- click on a .avi or .mpg file in Windows Explorer: the file is played by MM

Did you disable all the associations under Tools > Options > OS Integration and disable re-associate on startup?

Off Course no. :D
I never noticed the "re-associate at startup"...

By the way:
- why it is recommended to re-associate at startup? I cannot figure a good reason for.
- I don't want to remove the association with MM, I just want MM is not the default program.

Associations means it is the default program. If you disable associations you can still play and files of the deselected filetypes.

Reassociate is a common setting in applications as competing software might take associations away. Browsers also have this setting.

Thanks for your answer and it appears to have worked but, for the record, I've been using MediaMonkey for years now and have never had this issue before. I must say that it is quite annoying when new versions or whatever change settings without one's knowledge. I know that programs are constantly being improved but that really is annoying.

Well, video file support is new to MediaMonkey 4, otherwise everything works the same as MediaMonkey 3 where you would have set it under File Types instead of OS Integration.
