MM 4.0.3 is skipping every other track in playlist

Postby Phil_Rob » Fri Mar 09, 2012 4:25 pm

I recently upgraded from MM 3-something to MM 4.0.3 Everything seems to work fine, EXCEPT that now MM is skipping every other track in my playlists and general library. At the end of one song, the next highlights very briefly, then the following highlights and begins to play. This is NOT a problem with files not existing or being in the wrong location. If I double-click on the "middle" song that was skipped, it plays just fine, and at the end of that song it skips whatever comes next.

I didn't see anything like this listed in your forum. Am I the only one this is happening to? I never had this problem in MM 3. All the songs files are unchanged.

I am using a Dell Inspiron laptop with a Windows 7 OS.

I would be happy to provide a debug log if you need that, but you will have to tell me how to go about it. I did download and install MM 4.0.3. debug version from this address:
http://4258.voxcdn.com/sw/MediaMonkey_4 ... _Debug.exe
It went through the install process with no error messages. The problem still is happening even after this reinstall.
Please advise.

Hi again,
I haven't done the log report steps, but I did find the problem and a solution. When I disable "Silence between Songs" this skipping tracks doesn't happen anymore.
I found the following in your forum, and this did indeed solve the problem for me. I can now use enable Silence Between Songs and all remains fine. Here's the solution:

The solution to this is in the post immediately preceding yours.

(1) Go to the \MediaMonkey\scripts\auto\ directory where MediaMonkey is installed, and open the file, SilenceBetweenSongs.vbs with a text editor (preferably an editor that is "vbs aware", although Notepad will do).

(2) find the routine, "Sub GapOnTimer(Timer)"

(3) Comment out (or delete) the first three lines of the routine:

Code: Select all
If GapProgress.Value = 0 Then
SDB.Player.Next
End If

by placing a single quote quote as the first character in each line, like so

Code: Select all
'If GapProgress.Value = 0 Then
' SDB.Player.Next
'End If

(4) restart MediaMonkey

Hello, I am having the same problems with MM 4 , after syncing to Ipod Nano 5th Gen, many playlists songs will pause, and skip over songs completely throughout my playlists.
Not too familiar with editing Scripts etc. I went in my MM folder to - Scripts - Auto, which opens in Notepad, but all I see inside folder is one auto.txt file, with only a reference to MM developers. How do I find this SilenceBetweenSongs.vbs? Or routine, "Sub GapOnTimer(Timer)" ? Cannot find these anywhere in MM folder. Please advise specific steps. I am using Win XP Pro on Dell PC. Thanks!!!

Do the files skip in MediaMonkey or the iPod Nano?

Usually in Media Monkey playlist will skip over songs, and same for Ipod. Sometimes the songs in Ipod playlist will play ok and crossfade into next song fine, but mostly it will skip songs throughout, same for MM, back and forth , no consistent play and crossfade. Thanks for the quick response!

Not sure why you see this on the iPod. For MediaMonkey there can be several reasons: http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... ticleid=94

Just to add to that, not sure if this could also be a part of the problem, Just about a month ago , I recently downloaded the latest Media Monkey 4 and transferred all my Itunes playlists via Iplaylist into MM 4. I have synced my two Ipod Nanos 5th and 6th Gen, both are 16GB.
I noticed there are these other devices I do not know, showing up in MM4 under Device profile. One is another 16GB Ipod, but apparently this is a Ipod 16GB Touch Screen which I do not have, this is what shows as the Device picture, this device will pop up occasionally when I am syncing my Nano 16GB. My Nano only has 9.9 Gb of music but it will show in media Monkey as having 15 GB of music, sometimes I will get an unknow error etc.Its like it is confusing these 2 devices, but I do not know where this 16 GB touchscreen Device came from? Maybe transferred from Itunes from a friend using long ago?

Also shows an Iriver H1XX/3XX Series device in my MM4 , which I have never owned or had? Could this be a part of the problem too, if anyone knows? Thanks!

The picture can be incorrect, the device description is more important. Also MediaMonkey will have some default devices listed to show the plugins that come with MediaMonkey required to connect to those devices in case a user does have them. This shouldn't affect anything.

The Silence Between Songs addon is something that you would need to have installed yourself. If you didn't you shouldn't worry about it (see Tools > Extensions).

Problems with files on portable devices could be improper conversion rules allowing files types that are not supported to be synced to the device.

For the files in MediaMonkey check the Entire Library > Files to Edit > Dead Links node. Do many files show here? If so it is saying that those files can't be found by MediaMonkey and thus can't be played. If no files show this shouldn't be the problem you're having. In that case try to locate a file that failed to play using Windows Explorer and try to play it in MediaMonkey. If it fails it means a file type incompatibility if it plays you may want to send a debug log (step 4b) apturing the failure of files playing in MediaMonkey and send it to support.

Why files grey out: http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... ticleid=94 read this
Enable Entire Library under File > Manage Collections: http://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/index.p ... _Rules/4.0

I did have a about 5 or 6 songs with Deadlinks in my library that was giving me playback problems, but I already went in and rescanned these over a week ago, and have not been having those problems anymore.
So those extra devices showing in addition to my 2 current Ipods should not be effecting anything as far as playback and syncing? Should I leave them all enabled still, in case MM needs them somehow?

The files being skipped play in MM , but even though I have Crossfade option selected in my MM player, do not really hear it in any songs played in MM. The Crossfade feature does work and play in my Ipod Nanos most of the time, except all the random songs that freezes at beginning and then is skipped over. Just really wish I knew why sometimes they will play in playlist fine and even crossfade in fine, but others times will freeze, and be skipped over in playlist etc?
I have done all the Itune checks and looked thru your suggested links to try and check everything as best as possible, but cannot find any direct answers for this playback problem on both of my Ipod Nanos. Should I leave the Crossfade enabled in Itunes or no? Do the crossfade times have to be exactly the precise, same time length in Itunes and MM 4?

By the way, are you apart of MM Support Lowlander? I already sent a Debug a couple weeks ago to MM Support, but just received short Vague answers to only some of the problems, sorry to say, but the answers were not much help. I am getting desperate for a resolution to these playback problems, just dreading having to return to Itunes after all this time and effort. Thanks!!!

Are you saying that files play, but don't seem to crossfade?

Yes exactly, they all play , but without crossfade effect in MM, even though I have enabled in MM player. The Crossfade does work still in my Ipods after sycned with MM, at least most of the time.

So I have been chasing skipping tracks for nothing? Make sure you're using the MediaMonkey DirectSound output plugin.

Sorry, Let me clarify. They still skip mostly on my ipods in playlists, also still occasionally in MM player, But I do not use MM player that much to listen to my songs, mostly use to set up and sync my playlists to Ipods, but I notice also that the selected crossfade feature, does not appear to be working in MM4 player.

When I used MM Direct Sound output plugin, I had even more problems with my mp3 music in MM library, sometimes it would play songs, but many times it would freeze, and not play any songs at all , unless I did a complete Win XP, on my Dell PC Restart, which was a big headache and happened all the time in MM4. Switched to Waveout Output plugin, the frequent MM freezing stopped, and my songs play, but just the remaining playback and Ipod syncing issues still remain. Is there any other options I might try? Thanks!

I don't think WaveOut can crossfade.
