I have the same problem but it resulted after I turned off my Tascam Dr-40 recorder before ejecting it while it was still plugged in via usb port. I was not playing any files with the player at the time and i powered off the recorder manually after closing the explorer window like i've done in the past. MEdia monkey just won't load now just like how he describes. The start screen flashes for a brief second then disappears with the icon remaining in the lower left corner until you wave the mouse over it. Not sure if it's a virus but that's the only thing that happened that I would think could have affected it.
