Horrible problems

I've spent hours making playlists to put on my devices. I've had problem lately with MM in that about 900+ files won't import due to the "did not match import criteria" even though I'm certain that the files do, in fact, match the import criteria. There is mention of this problem in many threads but I didn't find a satisfactory answer.
Then today I wanted to export a playlist but noticed that the playlists had tons of duplicates that I had not put in there (because it always prompts and asks if you want to put the duplicates in). I used the tool to remove duplicates and it showed a huge list; I clicked remove duplicates and it did not work, so I ran it again, and it deleted the entire playlist. I can't find any "undo" or way of going back, and I'm about to strangle something. Running 4.0.2.1462

Did you check the other Collections like most of those other threads suggest? You can check the Entire Library (enable under File > Manage Collections) to see if the files are really not in your Library.

Yes, I checked other collections. The songs are in the library, of course; just not in the playlist anymore.
And also as to the other problem, still no reason why so many songs are not importing. I want to like this program, but so many problems! It's been kind of a pain from the beginning a few years ago.

And I replied that it didn't help, but I do appreciate a response. I just don't understand how a:file monitoring doesn't work, and b: you manually go in to add/rescan and for no apparent reason it doesn't recognize files that you are telling it to recognize.

To be honest, though, I'm more upset about losing my playlists because those took forever to make. There's no way to extract a playlist from an mp3 player, is there?

Well as stated often missing files are added and can be found in other Collections like Classical Music. Also the Notes here describe reasons files are ignored including them being hidden and them being in folders reserved for VirtualCD, Previews and UPnP cache: http://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/index.p ... /4.0#Notes

As for the Playlist duplicates did you check if the duplicates have the same Path? If they don't you won't get duplicate notifications nor will cleanup work.

About the import issue: I did look at what you'd written before and as I said, it didn't help, at least as far as I can tell. I still don't know why songs would import into the library somewhere, classical collection or otherwise, and yet I'd still get a message saying no files were imported. All of the audio types are checked in the add/rescan, and none of the files are hidden or in any other way weird; they're just plain old mp3 files sitting in folders in my music folder that is being monitored and scanned and still, for some reason, they are invisible to MM. This really shouldn't be so freaking hard, you know?

As far as checking duplicate paths, at this point they're gone, I can't see the paths. Maybe that was the issue? But you said "If they don't you won't get duplicate notifications nor will cleanup work." I'm a little unclear what you're saying. I went to the "remove duplicates from playlist" option and it showed a bunch of duplicates. It asked if I wanted to remove the duplicates, I said "yes", because I didn't actually want duplicates. How many people do, I wonder? It didn't seem to work at first, because I could still see a number of duplicates. So I did the "remove duplicates" thing again, and it again showed a bunch of duplicates and asked if I wanted to get rid of them. I still did want to, so I said again to Mediamonkey "yes", meaning "yes, I would like to remove the duplicates, dammit, that's why I already went through this rigamarole, why the hell didn't you do it the first time I said 'yes' ?" And then, the playlists were totally empty. I thought I must have done some weird ctrl-click something. There are absolutely zero songs in two playlists that were 8gb + before.

If files are already in the Library you will see this. Check the Entire Library > Location node and navigate to folders you believe have files that are missing to verify they are or aren't missing.

Duplicate warning and duplicate cleanup only remove the exact same file (same Path) from the Playlist, if you have 2 identical files, but with different Paths they will not be removed. I'm not aware there are any issues with duplicates on Playlists so it may have been operator error. As this issue isn't present anymore it would be hard to pursue it.

No. But the only way that they do not match import criteria is if they are a file type that is not selected in the rescan options window (as these are the only criteria to go by). What most people do not realize is that this count includes filetypes that are not listed in the options window (in fact includes ALL filetypes). So if when you scan your music folder there are also .jpg, .pdf, .doc, .db, or any other file type not listed in the options window, that is included in the count of files not imported due to not matching the import criteria.

Not as such, apparently (perhaps it would be useful to have a "click here to review" button that would display all files scanned and indicate whether imported or ignored) but you can test that it's working properly.

First, set your import criteria.

Then, create yourself a folder on your hard drive which contains some files you have set to import, some you have set to be ignored, and a mixture of small graphics files, text files, and so on. Put some files already in your MM library there too. Just a bunch of stuff. Make sure you know exactly how many of those you expect to import.

Then tell MM to scan the folder.

See what happens and see if it is doing what you expect.
