MM 4: Several Major Problems

Postby m_wet » Mon Jun 11, 2012 4:16 pm

Hey folks, I've spent some time digging through the forum, searching for solutions to these problems but I didn't find anything useful. So any help is appreciated :)

1st Problem: New Files won't show up in the Artist-Tree!
Whenever I add new songs to my library (File -> Add/Rescan [...] ) these files won't show up in Entire Library -> Artist & Album Artist -> [Name of the Artist]! They' re in the Entire Library -> Artist & Album Artist section but not in the Artist's subsection (new artists are completely missing in the tree!)

2nd Problem: Library Scan Speed!
I feel like this absolute horror has been addressed countless times. My entire music library consists of roughly 41,270 files or 250,7 GB. So we're nowhere near the advertised "Manage 100,000+ music and video files without bogging down." When I leave MM open, it takes about 24 hours to scan my entire library (which is really useless, see 1st problem!).

3rd Problem: Overall Speed!
Another huge issue. It's sloooow, reeeaaally slow! When I click on Entire Library (again, just ~41 % of the advertised number of files "without bogging down") it takes around 2-3 minutes until every song is loaded into the main window.

4th Problem: Sometimes I can't play songs!
This seems absolutely random and I don't know if it's been fixed in v4.0.5 but sometimes when I doubleclick on the song I want to play, it just won't start. Interesting thing is, when I right click the track, all the play-options are grey. I've found some sort of unsatisfying workaround by changing to another section of the library tree and back (e.g. files won't work in "Playlist 1" so I click on "Playlist 3" and back to "Playlist 1". Then everything seems normal again.)

PS:
Regarding speed issues: I don't think it's hardware related because I'm using an Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2.83GHz and 4 GB RAM and the system is clearly not stressed out when operating MM.

And just for the record: The only reason I keep using MM is because every other solution I've come across is even worse (iTunes, Winamp, Windows Media Player)! I really love the ideas and features of MediaMonkey and it's absolutely fantastic but the bugs - especially since v4 - are just spoiling the fun :(

1) Did you check other Collections as suggested?

2&3) Did you do complete library optimization as suggested?

1) Yep, everything from Music to Classical to every other Collection available.
2 & 3) Also yes, several times (complete and quick Optimization)

The only thing that comes to my mind is deleting the DB and starting from scratch but I'd rather avoid this step because I have some very convenient auto-playlists that use the "Played #" ...

1) Often a tagging issue. Artist, Album Artist and Album are tagged correctly?

2&3) Defragging the database file can have a major impact.

Everything tagged correctly (I'm a tagging nazi when it comes to music :D )

Ok, defragging the db file ... how do I do that? :D

1) Try collapse/expand of Artist & Album Artist node

2&3) You can either defrag the whole drive (not recommended for SSD) or defrag the DB file itself with something like Defraggler: http://www.piriform.com/defraggler

Collapsed/Expanded the nodes maaaany times (I'm having these problems for quiet some time now  ), didn't change anything.

Ok, defragging the DB file apparently improved Problem #3. Thanks for that! Problem #2 remains unimpressed :D

2) Are you scanning in everything new or scanning mostly files already in the Library?

Scanning files that are already in the library.

That shouldn't take that long, although if your Library view has many (most) of the tracks being scanned in view it will take a lot longer. Try rescanning with a node (in the Media Tree) selected with few tracks (like empty Now Playing).

I already tried that tip as few times (also closed and reopened MM while having the empty Now Playing open & all other nodes closed) but it didn't work

Do you have multiple tabs open?

PS. You can always capture a debug log (step 4b) and send it to support: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=69

Hi m_wet,

Re. issue 1) it might be easier/more helpful if you recorded a video showing:
-sample tracks that appear in Entire Library / Artist & Album artist, but not in Entire Library / Artist
-the Properties (i.e. all tags) of the tracks that fail to appear in the Artist node

Thanks.
