Producer by File Tagging

Post by swears »

Is their a field to place the producer of a song in the ID3 tag?

Right now, some of my songs have (produced by ....) in the title.

I'm pretty sure producer is different than composer or conductor.

This tag doesn't seem to be available in MediaMonkey. You could consider using a Custom field for the producer information. Remember that custom tags are not compatible with other software players, but are stored in the tags.

In the world of R&B, Rap and probably even Pop, Composer would be the closest thing to "Producer" since they're essentially "writing" the music. You could either use a field like Composer (I personally have been using Conductor since WMP and other software tends to put information in the Composer field and I don't want my "finely combed data" mingling with this un-checked data) or you could use the "Involved People" field with something like "Producer:Mario Winans;Co-Producer:Diddy" though the downside to this is that MediaMonkey currently doesn't have a way of displaying this field in the tree and thus you couldn't quickly look up all the tracks with a certain producer. (Composer and Conductor both have Tree Nodes though and can correctly parse multiple names via a ";" like "Name1; Name2")

The current version of MM can have "Producer" in the column view.

I spent a bit of time adding Producers (a fantastic option for a Hip Hop collection). A lot of the Producers have vanished. I'm wondering where the producer information is stored.

Thanks for any help.

I think that Producer is meant for Video and not music. Some of the tags between Music and Video are used for multiple purposes. I haven't found a document that really details (easily) which is which but I think if you search on messages created by me you will find a thread that includes some links from Lowlander (i think) that can be used to work through it. Maybe today I will find those bits and create an easier read.

See: http://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/index.p ... erties/4.0 Producer is only stored in database for audio formats thus it is lost if the files are removed from the database.

My music library grew in size so I moved some music files to another drive. I just moved them in Windows Explorer. This would be why I lost the Producer information. Is there a way to do this without losing the Producer information?

Thanx again.

Use MM to move the files rather than Win explorer. http://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/index.p ... enames/4.0

I know this is an old thread but YIKES.

A Producer is NOT the same as a Composer. NOT at ALL.

Even now I don't believe there is a standard defined field for Production Credits.

Many hits songs are due to a hit Producer, not the talent in the artist.

Technically Composers write music, Lyricists wrtie lyrics. On most liner notes these are combined, so you don't know who did which or if everyone did all. I don't recall if there is a formal Lyricists TAG, but it would be difficult to populate for us, since most album don't distinguish roles.

Producers craft the overall track, choosing instruments and arrangements, overseeing mixing of tracks and crafting the sound of the track. In the top 40 world of the last 35 years - Robert Lang, Ron Nevison, Narada Michael Walden, David Foster, Michael Omartian, Max Martin, Walter Alfanasieff, Timbaland, Jay Graydon, Guy Roche, Phil Ramone, Jimmy Iovine, Bob Clearmountain, Jim Steinman, Linda Perry and many other are hit producers behind hit songs--regardless of who composer the sheet music. Most work on projects from the songwriting side, but often they work with other people's songs. Phil Ramone produced quite a few Billy Joel albums, but Billy Joel wrote music and lyrics for 99% of everything he ever recorded. (I can only think of two songs with writing credits for others).

Production credits are very important to me because they often distinguish the tracks I'll like. See an album with a * and a hit producer on the one single you like and chances are, the rest of the album is of a very different quality.

Has this requirement for a "Producer" field in MP3 Tags ever been addressed?

I am using MS SyncToy to Maintain my MM MP3 databases across multiple PCs. The "Producer" field does not copy across but the "Conductor" field does so I can use that but, post-maintenance, I would like to be able to run a Check Field for Conductor and, where applicable, run a Copy Field to Producer procedure - does one exist?
